Some hard facts on embedded finance banks can no longer ignore. Our Boston Consulting Group (BCG) x Adyen Embedded Finance Report 2024 is now live. It highlights the growing appetite from SMBs to consume a broader range of financial services from the software platform they use to run their business. A market of $185Bn is up for grabs and adoption is on the rise. Leading SaaS companies are successful in generating significant revenues from embedding financial services in their product suite, already exceeding half of their total revenue base. Yet, less than 20% of the opportunity is addressed. If you are a SaaS platform or a Fintech, embedded finance is a strategic expansion opportunity you cannot ignore. Moving into banking will not be a walk in the park though. You will need to get your act together: make clear-cut “buy vs build” choices, beef-up your sales and marketing approaches and get compliance right. Financial services are neither bought nor sold like software features, and the space is increasingly regulated. If you are a bank, you cannot ignore the risk of losing the relationship primacy to software platforms. They have a greater ability to customize financial services for SMBs by natively supporting their workflow. It will be hard to match as a bank. You will need to refocus on more complex products and segments where you hold an advantage. And you will need to explore opportunities to partner in the software ecosystem. We are just back from #Money2020 ’24 edition in Amsterdam. I am personally very energized from having met so many great professionals and companies. Here are some reflections from the @alixpartners team:   Great to see how much enthusiasm, participation, energy and confidence the Payments industry still has across Europe. As usual a broad mix of participants: from large players to small but highly innovative emerging start ups as well as PE and VC investors No major new hot topic, challenge or imperative in the industry: operations efficiency along the entire value chain, frictionless user experiences, risk and fraud management are still high priority areas for the industry. Innovation is still high on the agenda, but we had the impression that companies, especially large established players, tend to focus back on the core to extract value from what is in place rather than looking for the next “holy grail”. GenAI is being approached with a more mature and conscious attitude than the hype seen in other industries, but this could have an easy explanation: the Payments industry has always handled real time massive quantities of data along a highly regulated value chain; this means that AI is already in the DNA of many players in pattern recognition algorithms and machine learning, so the industry sees this as an evolution rather than revolution.   It’s been fantastic to be back again and looking forward to the next #money2020

Driven by a strong banked population, it is oriented towards electronic, contactless and even cardless technologies. 🌐 Contactless and cardless payments, particularly via mobile NFC technologies, are becoming the norm, representing 37% of all POS transactions in 2023. Currence iDEAL continues to dominate the online payment landscape, processing €124 billion in transactions last year. 📈 The Tikkie app developed by ABN AMRO Bank N.V. is a very popular local means of payment and is used by over 7 million people or roughly 40% of the population. its popularity is partly due to the widespread use of WhatsApp. 🏦 The banking sector is highly concentrated, dominated by giants like ING Nederland, Rabobank, and ABN AMRO Bank N.V., which control 87% of the market in terms of total assets. Other local players include de Volksbank, and the "sustainable bank" Triodos Bank. In addition to traditional banking players, Dutch neobanks have emerged, namely bunq and Knab (by Aegon). 📶 The Netherlands is home to many payment service providers. One of its most renowned paytech is the processor and acquirer Adyen which provides payment solutions for Netflix, Meta, Uber and Spotify, among others. Equens Worldline , part of Worldline, became the largest instant payment processor in the euro area in 2019. Mollie is another Dutch processor widely used across Europe. Most people in the #payments industry think of Adyen as an acquirer or Payments Services Provider (PSP) on the payment acceptance side of the funds flow...however... If you were not aware, Adyen is also a licensed bank here in the USA & EU. Not only that, but Adyen also built a modern virtual ledger "core" and issuer processing stack in house (with Visa & Mastercard licenses) to power all types of use cases. I've been advocating for this strategy for years as the future of bank sponsorship in #fintech It not only enables greater speed to market, but it makes regulatory compliance easier and more robust as well. I've seen first hand how #Adyen takes new client card programs live in a matter of weeks rather than the many months (or sometimes years) competitors take to go live. That's one reason why I'm very excited to announce I'm working with Adyen on the Financial Services & Issuing team! This is the future of #fintech & #banksponsorship - building together in a compliant way, offloading the key financial "plumbing" to the regulated bank, letting the Fintech or corporation focus on differentiated innovation that benefits their end users. Dutch companies could release EUR 72.5bn of cash from working capital. Despite recent moves by global central banks to reduce interest rates, borrowing costs remain high and access to financing is limited. Companies across industries are seeking ways to secure sufficient funds for daily operations, growth, transformation and debt repayment. As a result, working capital management has been receiving renewed board attention, as it represents opportunity to release cash for these purposes internally whilst improving a company’s operational efficiency and without financing costs. Between 2018 and 2022, cash conversion cycle (“CCC”) days for Dutch companies overall improved by 8 days, though 48% of companies sampled saw a CCC deterioration, overall inventory days deteriorated by 6 days and significant dispersion was observed across sectors. For instance, real estate, consumer & retail and industrials companies saw improvements in working capital management, whilst technology, media and telecommunications, automobile and healthcare players experienced liquidity pressure from working capital build-up. bunq Unleashes Speech-to-Speech AI Translation: The New Frontier for Challenger Banks Dutch challenger bank Bunq, boasting 14.5 million users across Europe, has upped the ante in the race to deliver advanced AI-enabled banking experiences. In a move that could redefine customer support, Bunq claims to be the world’s first bank to launch real-time, speech-to-speech translation right within its app an innovative leap that spares users the hassle of switching between translation apps or offline tools. Bunq’s founder and CEO, Ali Niknam, remarks, “At Bunq, we have always used technology to make life easy, and this update takes that to a new level.” The timing is no coincidence: AI assistants are fast becoming a battleground for fintechs eager to demonstrate their tech prowess. Danish challenger bank Lunar recently revealed its own AI-powered voice assistant, while Klarna grabbed headlines with its high-profile partnership with OpenAI. Bunq’s upgraded assistant, Finn, launched at the end of 2023 and now handles near-instant translations for around 30 languages, streamlining back-and-forth conversations between customers and support staff. Data Sharing between merchants and issuers that really works. What Capital One has built and has demonstrated for well over a year now is with additional data fields (and a fairly minimal set too) they can increase acceptance and decrease fraud. It is the promise of 3DS and data sharing that we have been working on and talking about in the industry for over 30 years (maybe longer but that's when I started). This partnership with Capital One and two innovative acquirers Stripe and Adyen could really be the start of the next big wave of innovation in our industry. I am so excited to watch this space. Watch this space. I am optimistic other issuers will join the platform, and I know other acquirers certainly will. What a great step forward in the industry for consumers and merchants and the entire ecosystem!

Adyen’s H1 financials are out. Let’s break them down… 🔥We’re continuing to grow profitably and in line with our guidance. Net revenues for our first half came in at €913.4 mn / $1.1 bn. We’re up 24% year-over-year. 👊We’re seeing the power of building highly talented, lean teams that operate with speed (#AdyenFormula). In the first half, we brought on 37 net new hires bringing us to a total of 4,233 FTE. 🇺🇸🇨🇦 We’re continuing to invest in North America. With 30% yoy growth, it’s our fastest growing region. In H1, we brought in significant wins such as Scheels, Crate and Barrel, CB2 and Pet Supplies Plus. 💚 Our #UnifiedCommerce proposition helps hundreds of #enterprise businesses create #omnichannel experiences.
