The felt temperature in Istanbul this year reached 45 °C. The exhausts of the busy traffic of this metropole make the heat island effect worse. If current emission trends continue, demand for air conditioning will increase by 70%. The climate crisis and related extreme temperatures are daunting and can have deeper consequences for our lives. But cities like Istanbul are looking at solutions and ensuring that nature is used as a solution to protect its citizens and future generations.

🌲🎉💚 This year we celebrated the EU Nature Restoration Law (NRL) being adopted🌲🎉💚 This was a huge step forward for protecting our forests, lakes, coasts and overall biodiversity. A majority of the EU Council decided to safeguard and restore Europe’s nature, both land as well as sea based. This is especially crucial for our forests as we must ensure they remain healthy and resilient for this and the next generations. Although the green light for the NRL is great news, the original proposal with strong nature protection and restoration measures was watered down in political negotiations. Read more about Europe’s forests and why they need much more protection: https://bit.ly/45AgDJ1 #EU #NatureRestorationLaw #biodiversity #nature

We are privileged to have many committed and caring people working here and in all WRI offices. Wishing everybody a great end of 2024!
A lovely World Resources Institute all staff meeting today, presided over by Ani Dasgupta and Wanjira Mathai with great generosity and warmth. Nothing but gratitude for my wonderful colleagues across the world at WRI: Brazil, Colombia, Mexico; the US; across Europe (The Hague, Bonn, London, Istanbul); across Africa, including Ethiopia, Kenya, the DRC, Cameroon, Rwanda and Gabon; India; Indonesia; China. So many extraordinarily kind, committed, caring and devoted people; and such a sense of kinship and collegiality. I end the year so thankful to be part of it.

Due to its busy traffic, Istanbul suffers from a heightened heat island effect. New WRI data show that if the CO2 emissions keep rising, the city could suffer heat waves as long as 33 days by 2050. Demand for air-conditioning would then go up by a stunning 70%. But wait! There are good things happening to mitigate the heating effect. The city of Istanbul is implementing more nature-based solutions such as added green spaces to cool the city. Governments around the world, including the Turkish one, need to present a plan by the spring of 2025 laying out how they will reduce the national emissions (NDCs). As climate impacts worsen, developing countries face unique challenges in reducing emissions and adapting to change. China, now a significant player in climate finance, has contributed nearly $4.5 billion annually between 2013 and 2022, supporting low-carbon projects across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. WRI’s latest research sheds light on China’s impact and the importance of transparency in climate finance. Greater clarity can lead to stronger, coordinated action globally. “Every country is trying to do something. The transition is taking place, it is just not happening fast enough." - Ani Dasgupta At today's Active Mobility Finance Workshop, World Resources Institute President & CEO Ani Dasgupta and Vice President & Regional Director for World Resources Institute Europe Stientje van Veldhoven led an important discussion on accelerating the transition to sustainable transport. With transport emissions moving in the wrong direction globally, they stressed three key priorities to drive transformative investment in walking and cycling infrastructure: • Strengthening the business case for active mobility • Improving data collection and communication • Aligning government mandates across all levels "We need to change the transport system, rather than just focus on decarbonizing." - Stientje van Veldhoven Stay tuned for more insights from this groundbreaking workshop tomorrow and Thursday! #ActiveMobility #Mobility #Transport #Cycling #Walking #Infrastructure #SustainableTransport
