In this edition, our Founder & CEO Marc Arts and Dutch quinoa grower Lennert den Boer are speaking about quinoa innovations and the significant improvements for Dutch and Belgian quinoa. 🌾 Some aspects covered in the article are: 🌱 The reasons for the growing demand for organic quinoa in the Netherlands. 🌱 The 22 large-scale quinoa growers in the Netherlands and Belgium are highlighted, including Lennert den Boer. Lennert den Boer explains his reason for choosing quinoa: "I was looking for a crop with increasing demand, and I wanted to include less vulnerable crops in my crop rotation. So, a bit of risk diversification." 🌱 An explanation of why soil quality is so important and decisive for good quinoa cultivation. 🌱 The versatility of quinoa, through an explanation of the different markets in which quinoa is used. "Quinoa is mainly processed into salads. Eko-plaza recently launched a packaging-free Wisselwaar concept. We operate in B2B and don't have our own brand, but in fact, we supply almost all well-known brands." More and more food companies are switching to locally sourced quinoa," according to Arts. 🌱 The challenges of the color of Dutch quinoa: many consume️rs pre️fe️r a light product because they are used to that from the Andes. However, our quinoa is wholegrain, and therefore is a bit darker. Because of this, it contains more nutrients and is much more sustainable. It's great to see how this 'superfood' is becoming more popular due to its improvements and advantages. Their state-of-the-art plant has a processing capacity of 10,000 metric tons per year, underscoring their strong commitment to establishing #quinoa as a major crop in France and across Europe. A special acknowledgment to Jason Abbott, who has led the #QuinoaDeAnjou project from its beginning in 2010. At RADICLE Crops, we are proud to be a part of this journey. With the upcoming release of our new #F1 #hybrid #varieties, which offer up to 30% higher yields compared to our current best-performing varieties in France, our partners will have the resources they need to become one of the leading quinoa producers in the world 🌍. Harvest Day Success! ☀️🚜 Oogstdag Succes! 🎉 We took full advantage of the weather this weekend and harvested our quinoa field trial in the Netherlands. 🇳🇱 Our dedicated team successfully harvested 648 plots, including our promising new experimental F1 hybrids. Now comes the exciting part: post-harvest analysis! We will analyze the harvested quinoa for yield, protein content, and other key traits. This data will help us develop our genomic prediction model, a crucial step in breeding for even better quinoa varieties. 🌱 A big thanks to GIESEN CROP RESEARCH B.V. for their support throughout this trial and the harvesting process. This marks the end of our spring-summer trials for 2024 and we are looking forward to sharing the results with you soon. #Bastille is a great #quinoa variety! It has been performing admirably across Canada, New Zealand, and North Western Europe (including Scandinavia!). This year, it has broken yield across several locations. If the community (scientists, breeders, growers, and processors) continues with this momentum, it won’t be long before #quinoa becomes a global crop 💪🏽!
This field of British quinoa, grown near Reading and harvested around three weeks ago, could just possibly have set a new harvest yield record for the UK, but only time will tell once fully processed. This has been achieved by using our new variety Bastile, which seems to have all the desired traits of quality, yield and easy of harvest. That combined with an experienced quinoa grower seem to have been a winning combination.
