Although the lighting of the lightcage is more then sufficient, having flies constantly land on your camera makes shooting a video in there a challenge! Luckily we succeeded and are pleased to share this video with you showcasing our light cage and egg collector rail system. At InsectoCycle, we’re dedicated to ensuring our customers succeed with our products and services. Our mission? To develop cost-effective reproduction technologies, enabling our customers to focus on insect farming. Curious to learn more? Watch the video to see our system in action. #Innovation #Sustainability #InsectFarming #BlackSoldierFly

In our recent post, we mentioned that the legislation regarding classifying black soldier flies (BSF) as livestock and the subsequent feedstocks allowed needs to change. Addressing these restrictions could open up more sustainable options for BSF production. What better way to address this than to send Jason Kiem (a political scientist by training) to Brussels for the IPIFF (International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed) Annual Congress! Besides discussing legislation, Jason is also happy to share insights about our #InsectoCage. So, feel free to approach Jason if you have questions about what InsectoCycle and the #InsectoCage can do for you. #InsectoCycle #InsectoCage #Brussels #Legislation #Sustainability

The wait is over! Our new Black Soldier Fly (#BSF) cages, designed and installed by the experts at InsectoCycle, are officially in place - marking a major milestone for our #NAIC. These cutting-edge structures are more than just cages, they bring us one step closer to upscaling our production and advancing our mission to optimize BSF #genetics and drive real change in #sustainable #protein production. A huge thank you to the incredible team at InsectoCycle Jesse Turkstra and our team at NRGene Canada. This is just the beginning – stay tuned for what’s next! 🐛 Patsy Gomez-Picos, Ph.D. Gil Magar Sebastian Espinoza-Ulloa prashani dilushika Karen Glusco, Winny Ryu #BSFGenetics #SustainableInnovation #FutureOfProtein #NAIC

Last Wednesday, Jason Kiem represented us at the Dutch stakeholder meeting for the insect sector, where an urgent takeaway was clear: if regulations don’t adapt, the insect sector risks failing in Europe. Current legislation classifies black soldier flies (BSF) alongside traditional livestock like chickens and cows, a framework that doesn’t account for the unique role of insects. As natural detritivores, insects are uniquely suited to process waste streams from supermarkets and restaurants, turning potential food waste into sustainable resources. One of the attendees captured this sentiment well: "We don’t eat our pets, so why be reluctant to feed them larvae raised on supermarket waste streams?" This question highlights an actionable first step, using insects to safely process waste and feed our pets. Making the concept more relatable and pave the way for broader regulatory changes. The technology for large-scale production is ready. A mountain of evidence has shown that the BSF is able to safely convert almost anything into feed-grade larvae protein. Now, it’s time to free the BSF from outdated rules and unlock the full potential of insects in a truly circular economy for Europe. #circulareconomy #blacksoldierfly #breeding

This week, we "had a new employee," Maxime Baptistan from La Compagnie des Insectes, who joined us for a two-day visit to dive into the ins and outs of operating the InsectoCage. We were happy to have him around. Maxime Baptistan and Seppe Salari spent a whole morning in the climate chambers, calculators out and papers in hand, comparing KPIs like egg recovery ratios, pupae hatching rates, and our favorite metric: grams of eggs per kilogram of dead flies. It was a day of mutual learning! The next morning, Maxime Baptistan joined us again to carry out the weekly operations required to run the InsectoCage. We look forward to continuing this working relationship with La Compagnie des Insectes.

The egg collectors harvested from our InsectoCages are filled with eggs, but it's the neonates you need for your processes. From just 1 gram of BSF eggs we collect over 30,000 neonates. Which means our cage produces 6 million neonates per day! Ever wondered what millions of neonates look like? Well, they look like grains of sand, as you can see in the video. It’s incredible that this "pile of sand" can make 5 to 6 tonnes of waste disappear in just 2 weeks! #Efficiency #BSFreproduction #InsectoCage

We’re excited to welcome Amber Goede to the team! Amber Goede is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Animal Science at Wageningen University & Research and has joined us as an intern. Her research will focus on the impact of larvae density and fiber content in feed on pupae development. We’re eager to see how her findings can enhance our diet recommendations for the InsectoCage, allowing us to optimise feed strategies and support insect-rearing operations globally! #WUR #Entomology #AnimalSciences #BSF
