We revitalize society. We do so through research, development of tools, providing training and workshops, and through the creation and design of inclusive third places. We contribute to a feeling of time well spent at governmental organizations, municipalities, libraries, theaters, universities and many more. includi sustainably contributes to the social infrastructure of communities. How? By fueling inclusivity.
Looking back at the annual Ungdom og Fritid conference for youth workers in Kongsberg, Norway, where our creative director, Aat Vos, took the stage as a speaker and led an interactive workshop on Third Places.
Participants explored the transformative power of these social connectors, discovering how youth clubs can become homes away from home through co-creation with young people. Practical obstacles faced by youth workers were linked to includi's 6 pillars of successful third places, sparking creative and actionable solutions.
Inspiring, educational, and full of hope. Thank you, Ungdom og Fritid, for the opportunity to contribute!

A delightful throwback to the annual Ungdom og Fritid conference for youth workers in Kongsberg, Norway. I had the honor of speaking on "The Importance of Third Places and How to Involve Youth in Creating and Maintaining Them" and exchanging ideas with youth workers during a short workshop.
To explore this topic, we drew from includi's extensive experience in third placemaking and integrated key theories on community involvement, such as the work of Cormac Russell.
Special thanks to Chair Andre Ruud, as well as Kristin Eliassen, and a warm acknowledgment to “special guest” Tomi Kiilakoski, whose insightful research I referenced during the lecture - and who turned out to be one of the attendees. What a pleasant surprise!
Congratulations to Ungdom og Fritid for securing additional funding to further empower youth and child workers across Norway.

Bringing the Third Place Feel Into the Office
Sociologist Ray Oldenburg’s “third place” concept—a space beyond home and work for social connection and relaxation—has inspired companies to create internal third places: cozy coffee corners or lounge areas.
But why stop there?
When designing our new office, we wanted a home away from home feel, reflecting our DNA, while also tackling challenges like limited meeting spaces and noise issues. The result? A welcoming environment with enclosed meeting rooms, open zones, focus areas, and a living room complete with a community table, open kitchen, numerous cocoons, and even a nap room.

Building Bonaire’s Dream: an Inclusive, Community Library
Our project on Bonaire proves that you can create a beautiful and inclusive community library in less than a year! The opening of this new, temporary library in March is coming up. In the meantime, hard work continues both on Bonaire and in the Netherlands, where our construction partner Harryvan is currently crafting the sustainable modular interior. It will be shipped as a flat pack and can be disassembled and reused.
Wherever the colorful library eventually finds its permanent home, it will serve as a warm and welcoming meeting place for the entire Bonairean community. Stimulating growth and development for everyone.
As Jennifer Pocornie-Martis from openbaar lichaam Bonaire (OLB) beautifully said:
"Our dream is an inclusive library where everyone can develop, a place we deserve. A community center full of opportunities that can inspire other countries and islands in the region."

Libraries can save lives during crises
New research from Erasmus University Rotterdam underscores the essential role of social infrastructures, like libraries and community centers, during crises.
The report “The five functions of social infrastructure during a pandemic” highlights five key roles of a vital social infrastructure during crises, summarized as the “COVID functions: Communicating reliable information, Observing needs, Connecting communities, Initiating local projects, and Providing essential services.
The study urges government investment, as these places are crucial for societal well-being and can even be lifesaving in emergencies! Strong social infrastructure isn’t just vital in crises—it enriches daily community life.
Research led by prof. dr. Godfried Engbersen en dr. Carla Kolner.

𝐆𝐞𝐧-𝐙 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲!
Great news for Dutch libraries: membership among kids and teens rose in 2023! A remarkable 2.3 million young people under 18 are now members of public libraries—about 70% of this age group. Even more exciting is the growth among 18- to 20-year-olds, which is partly driven by discounted or free memberships that keep young adults engaged.
Gen-Z isn’t just borrowing books; they’re using libraries as hubs for learning, creativity, and social connection through workshops, study groups, and cultural events.
At includi, we’re proud to be part of this movement. We actively involve young people in shaping these experiences, creating vibrant, inclusive environments that inspire the next generation of readers, creators, and learners!

Book Of The Month: "Traveling Without John" by Geert Mak.
"Every month, includi team members share their favorite book. This time, our Interior Designer, Thijs Alberts, picked 'Traveling Without John' by Geert Mak.
In this book, Mak retraces John Steinbeck's journey across the United States, but in modern times, reflecting on how America has changed since Steinbeck's adventure. Thijs chose this audiobook for his cycling trip to Berlin and found it to be the perfect companion.
Thijs shares: 'Although it focuses on American history, the book offers numerous parallels to the Netherlands. I find it fascinating how Geert Mak describes a decline that many of us recognize, with the "everything used to be better" sentiment growing stronger and stronger. It seems as if many communities are falling apart without anything replacing them. A changing society calls for new kinds of gathering places, like third places, that strengthen communities and bring people back together.'
At includi, we are dedicated to designing those third places — inclusive environments where people can connect, share, and grow together."
