Building the Network to Defeat the Network of Scams
Over ons
Our mission is to protect consumers worldwide from scams by raising awareness, enabling hand-on tools for consumers and law enforcement, facilitating knowledge sharing, organizing research, supporting the development of (legal) best practices, and offering training and education. The number of online scams is booming. $1.026 trillion was lost by consumers to scams in 2023. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg as only 7% of all victims report the online scam to the police. Still, in most developed countries 20 to 40% of all reported crime is now related to online fraud. Scammers, however, can go free because they can operate globally, while law enforcement operations locally, regionally, or nationally. According to the World Economic Forum, only 0.05% of all cybercriminals are prosecuted.

🚨 The recent UNODC report on "Transnational Organized Crime and the Convergence of Cyber-Enabled Fraud, Underground Banking and Technological Innovation in Southeast Asia" exposes a dramatic challenge, not just to local enforcement but to global security. 🌍 As highlighted in our Global State of Scams Report 2024, the stakes couldn't be higher. Southeast Asia has emerged as a critical battleground where organized crime leverages underregulated financial environments and advanced technologies to perpetrate scams at an industrial scale. 🔗 The report points to a crucial need for international collaboration. It’s not enough to respond with traditional tactics; we must harness innovative technologies and foster multi-sector partnerships to outpace these criminal networks. 💡 Key Takeaways: 🛡️Technological Leverage: Criminals are exploiting blockchain and AI to advance their operations. It’s imperative we use these same technologies to strengthen our defenses. 🛡️Regulatory Gaps: There's an urgent need to close regulatory loopholes that allow these crimes to flourish across borders. 🛡️Collaborative Action: Combating this issue requires a united front—integrating efforts from governments, technology leaders, and financial institutions worldwide. 👉 Read the GASA blog summary by Sam Rogers: https://lnkd.in/e4WQWhY9 🌐 Access the full UNODC report here: https://lnkd.in/dY3izTgk #GASA #CyberSecurity #FinancialCrime #Innovation #Cybercrime #UNODC #FinancialServices #LawEnforcement #Transnational
