Landscape restoration in a Central Forest Reserve in Uganda | In collaboration with Equatoria Forestry Company and hummingbirds, we are working on a large-scale project to restore the degraded Mount Kei Central Forest Reserve in Uganda. Here are some key facts about the project: 🌱 We aim to restore 27,000 hectares of degraded vegetation into natural forests and develop 15,000 hectares into commercial tree plantations. 🌿 Achieving carbon removals: Our efforts will remove CO2 from the atmosphere and generate carbon credits, contributing to climate change mitigation. The project will remove up to 5 million tons of CO2 over 40 years. 👨🌾 Local community engagement: The project will create from 400 to 600 jobs for local communities, who will be involved in nursery management, planting activities, maintenance and wood processing. 🌾 Sustainable development: Intercropping nitrogen-fixing crops in between tree lines will ensure local food production while directly contributing to the restoration of degraded areas. 💹 Economic impact: High-value teak timber production will secure wood supply and generate substantial revenue, ensuring economic benefits even after the carbon credits issuances end. We are excited to share more about this initiative soon and its positive impacts on the environment and the surrounding communities. 🌳 #ForestRestoration #SustainableForestry #ClimateAction #MountKei #Uganda #CommunityDevelopment #CarbonCredits #hummingbirds #EquatoriaForestryCompany

🌍 Field insights from Uganda’s forest reserves 🌱 Last month, our team conducted a carbon baseline assessment in northern Uganda. This involved randomly selecting locations across the diverse vegetation types within the reserves, ranging from grasslands to lightly degraded forests. At each site, they measured tree basal area, tree height, and recorded various site characteristics. The collected data provides a clear picture of the current biomass and the restoration potential that the project can achieve. Form International plays a key role in preparing this project, ensuring its sustainability. By including a plantation component designed to generate future sustainable income, the project aims to support the restoration and long-term protection of the majority of the area as a natural forest ecosystem. 🌿 Read more: https://lnkd.in/e9uruGRa #ForestRestoration #ForestCarbonProjects #CarbonBaselineAssessment #Sustainability #Uganda

hummingbirds' team was on a field mission in #Uganda last week for the validation audit of our Mount Kei Reforestation project! The project is divided into two parts: 🪵 Teak plantation, that will be sustainably managed on 15,000 hectares of deforested land. 🌲Native forest restoration of 27,000 hectares of highly degraded land. Together with the auditors’ team, our local partner Equatoria Forestry Company, and our forest consultant Form International, we visited the areas that have already been planted in 2023 and 2024, as well as checked some plots that will be managed in the following years. Here is what we have acheived so far: ✅ More than 220 hectares have already been planted and the team was happy to see the seedlings growing fast and reaching up to 5 meters tall in just one year! ✅ Implementation of an innovative #intercropping model with smallholder farmers, forming beautiful agroforestry systems with groundnut, maize and beans, among other crops. ✅ The team walked along the next 400 hectares set for the 2025 planting campaign and checked the nursery preparation to produce approximately 500,000 seedlings for next year - an ambitious but exciting challenge ahead! 🎯 What’s next? We’re on track for registration under Verra in the coming months… Stay tuned! 🐦 Victoria Labourdette, Vitor Vannozzi Brito, Anaïs BACH, Damien Ricordeau

📸 NEW VISUALS FROM MOUNT KEI | We are pleased to share that Opmeer Reports recently visited our Mount Kei project in Uganda, capturing stunning visuals of our work on the ground. 🌱 This project focuses on restoring about 26,000 hectares of heavily degraded land into natural forest through assisted natural regeneration, enrichment plantings, and conservation efforts. In addition, 14,000 hectares will be developed into commercial tree plantations, with restored riparian zones to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. We’re excited to share a selection of these beautiful images! Stay tuned—more exciting details about this project are coming soon. #Sustainability #Reforestation #MountKei #Uganda #NatureRestoration
