🎄 Managing Uncertainty in Projects: Lessons from Cooking Christmas Dinner From my experience, neglecting uncertainty is one of the biggest mistakes in project management. You might think, “How can I prepare for something I can’t predict?” But at least you can plan for the unexpected—and that’s the key to avoiding disruptions. With Christmas around the corner, let’s look at some real-life examples of managing uncertainty from holiday preparations: - Time buffer: Before cooking a holiday meal, you need to shop in advance to avoid last-minute shortages or early store closures. - Capacity buffer: You buy extra ingredients in case something spoils, the recipe requires more, or an unexpected guest arrives. - Planning for variability: When cooking a new dish, you plan the process ahead, define the critical path, and allow extra time in case things take longer than expected. These same strategies apply to project management—especially when you manage multiple projects at once. Establishing buffers protects your projects from uncertainties and derailment.
