Looking Back, Moving Forward: European Hydrogen Sustainability & Circularity Panel 💧🌍 As 2024 draws to a close, our team is proud to reflect on the milestones of the European Hydrogen Sustainability and Circularity Panel (EHS&CP). Established in February this year by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the panel consists of a team of 15 hydrogen experts and will be pivotal in embedding sustainability and circularity principles in the development of hydrogen technology across Europe. 🔑 Key Achievements this year: 🔹 Formation of the EHS&CP – a dedicated advisory body for sustainable and circular hydrogen innovation. 🔹 A comprehensive report detailing the challenges and opportunities of large-scale hydrogen adoption, outlining recommendations for a multi-objective optimisation approach to policymaking. 🔹 Development of sustainability and circularity indicators, including environmental, social, and economic impacts along the hydrogen value chain. 🔍 Insights & Challenges: 🔹Material reliance: Critical raw materials such as platinum and iridium face potential supply risks. 🔹Water use: Hydrogen production demands high water volumes, posing risks in water-scarce regions. 🔹Land use: Land use for hydrogen competes with other infrastructure needs. ✅ Actionable recommendations: 🔹Prioritising material optimisation and recycling strategies to address reliance on critical raw materials. 🔹Employing life-cycle assessment (LCA) tools to track carbon footprint, resource efficiency, and socio-economic impacts. 🔹Balancing cost, emissions, and socio-environmental trade-offs in policymaking. Here’s what happened at the 2024 Lorenzo Natali Prize Award Ceremony 🎉 In June, 1257 journalists submitted their applicants for a chance to win in one of four prize categories. On 26 November, we hosted the 32nd Edition of the #LorenzoNataliPrize, coming together to celebrate the seven outstanding winners of 2024: Jamaima Afridi, Mathilde Cusin, Manon de Couët, Martin Boudot, Gabriela Ramírez, Tina Xu, and Bienvenido Velasco. 🏆   Ecorys is honoured and grateful to have collaborated with DG INTPA in organising and implementing this significant award, which upholds press freedom and celebrates journalistic excellence.   Special thanks to Euronews for their collaboration throughout the project and Mared Gwyn Jones for her moderation services offered at the Ceremony. Ecorys Leads Study for DG TAXUD on EU Tariff Suspensions & Quotas Ecorys has been selected to lead an important study for DG TAXUD, evaluating the EU’s Autonomous Tariff Suspensions and Quotas scheme. Since its launch in the 1970s, this scheme has been aimed at improving the competitiveness of European industries by providing temporary tariff reductions on key imports. Our study will be conducted in two phases: 1️⃣ Phase 1: Assessing the scheme’s effectiveness and relevance in today’s fast-changing trade landscape, where trade liberalisation, green initiatives, and digitalisation are redefining EU priorities. 2️⃣ Phase 2: Offering recommendations to modernise the scheme, focusing on reducing Europe’s dependency on external suppliers, enhancing competitiveness, and bolstering strategic industries. We're pleased to announce the publication of findings from our EU Media Literacy Policy Study! Carried out between September 2023 and July 2024, this programme of work involved:   🔍 Mapping and reviewing policies supporting media literacy at EU and country levels, with deep dives in the UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Romania and Spain. 🎓 Providing insights from Europe’s diverse media literacy initiatives, including those supported by Google, Google.org, and YouTube. 🚀 Assessing the implications of emerging technologies, such as Generative AI. We would like to thank Google for commissioning the work, and our expert advisers at LSE’s Department of Media and Communications for their support and guidance throughout.
