Bridge2Food is pleased to announce the release of the first comprehensive macroeconomic data for the global plant protein sector. Key highlights include: 🏭 Production & Orders: Increasing production activity and orders in Q3, with 70% capacity utilization in early Q4. Inventories adequate though some firms face seasonal challenges. 📊 Inputs & Prices: Rising input costs (excluding labour) but relatively stable selling prices, reflecting competitive pressures to innovate or accept tighter margins. 👩💼 Labour: Modest hiring continues despite increasing labour costs and a sector-wide shortage of skilled workers. 📈 Investment & Innovation: Increased 2024 investments focused on capacity and optimisation, primarily driven by technological change. Outlook for 2025 signals confidence but shifting investment drivers. The latest figures come from an EU-funded industry reporting and intelligence framework, established to empower policymakers, managers, and researchers with essential data tools critical for the sector’s development. Hosted by B2F Research, the research and science communication arm of Bridge2Food, the framework follows methodology of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs and has received funding from the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the GIANT LEAPS project grant agreement. At the start of each quarter, firms across the plant protein supply chain are invited to participate by providing a series of high-level, non-sensitive business metrics through a simple 10-minute questionnaire. Participating firms gain pre-release access to aggregated data, special reports, and detailed data breakdowns, among other exclusive benefits. “These data fill a crucial gap and provide valuable new insights into the sector,” said Vincent Brain, General Manager at Bridge2Food. “However, their true value will become clear in upcoming periods, when, for the first time, it will be possible to empirically track changes taking place across the industry, quarter to quarter and year over year”. Great to work with Andreea Bota, Eric Strating, and the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Chicago on Bridge2Food North America last week. Thank you for your collaboration and support to help make a better food future.
🌟 Welcoming Innovation in Food Sustainability 🌟 Last week, we had the honor of hosting a Welcome Reception for Bridge2Food North America at the historic Mill City Museum in Minneapolis, with warm welcomes from Consul General Eric Strating and Agricultural Counselor Ton van Arnhem, as well as a breakfast networking session with our friends from MBOLDmn and Consulate General of Canada in Minneapolis | Consulat général du Canada à Minneapolis. The Bridge2Food Course and Summit showcased the strength of Dutch innovation in the food sector and highlighted the power of international collaboration, with inspiring examples of Canadian-U.S. market entry and R&D partnerships, such as ENOUGH and Cargill. With events across the world, Bridge2Food enables awareness and opportunities in the alternative proteins industry. Chair Lu Ann Williams inspired participants by presenting latest market insights in the sector and examples of products available on Dutch supermarket shelves, sparking discussions about future opportunities in sustainable food solutions—particularly in the space of hybrid-based protein products. Precision fermentation scale-ups revyve and Vivici shared insights on formulation challenges and the innovative opportunities this biotechnology offers the food industry. Participants even enjoyed tasting revyve’s ingredients in tasty, dairy- and egg-free pancakes! Another key takeaway from the conference was the vital role of policy in promoting diverse protein options. Agricultural Counselor Ton van Arnhem participated in a dynamic panel alongside experts from Canada and the U.S., including Minnesota Department of Agriculture Commissioner Tom Petersen. All speakers underscored the importance of progressive policies in facilitating access to plant-based proteins. Pulses and grains present significant solutions for advancing sustainability goals in the food industry, and farmers need support to cultivate these essential crops. Together, we are shaping a more sustainable future for our food systems! 🌱✨ Vincent Brain | JoAnne Berkenkamp | Christina Connelly (she/her/elle) | Shannon Schlecht | Andreea Bota | Tessa Nauta | Charlotte Neher | Maria Rossi Koller | Jordania Valentim | Stephan van Sint Fiet |
