Last year, some 70,000 bicycles that were parked incorrectly or for too long ended up in Amsterdam’s Fietsdepot, the municipal bicycle depot. Our latest article is about the depot and how it works with incorrectly parked bicycles and left behind bicycles. https://lnkd.in/e4zh93-j

Let’s talk about speed: Safer vehicles or safer streets? That's what the talk will about in Pakhuis de Zwijger on Wed 18 Dec, 20.00 Vehicle speeds profoundly effects our experience of cities. What feels too fast or too slow often depends on the place we occupy in traffic: a pedestrian may feel endangered by a motorist’s speed, while the motorist simply wants to reach their destination. Traditionally, fixed speed limits have been the solution, but these don’t account for the dynamic nature of urban spaces, nor the emergence of new vehicle types. Unsafe streets push people into safer vehicles, but in doing so, we risk neglecting making safer streets. To create safer, more livable streets, we need to rethink our approach to speed regulation, considering the evolving complexity of urban life. This event marks the start of our journey towards the Speed Summit in 2025. The conversation opens with Carl Honoré, Luca Bertolini, and Onno Kramer exploring what should come first for liveable cities: safe streets or safe vehicles. https://lnkd.in/e44PQ6Xe The project about speed is a collaboration of Gemeente Amsterdam and Townmaking Institute, Servaz van Berkum moderates the evening, Paul Timmer, Pepijn Verpaalen, Anne H., Sophie Konings, karin broer, Lútsen de Jong, Marjolein de Lange, Reinder Rustema

About 1 in 50 traffic accidents in Amsterdam with serious injuries are blind spot collisions. For fatal accidents, this is even more. Victims are often cyclists and sometimes pedestrians. For 20 years, Gemeente Amsterdam is working to prevent these collisions. With mirrors at traffic lights for better vision, extra warning signs and campaigns to raise awareness. To further tackle the blind spot problem, the city has started the Blind Spot Approach, as part of the ‘Working Plan for Road Safety, 30 km/h, Pedestrians and Cyclists 2024′. Read all about the challenges of the blind spot and the measures that are taken in our latest article: https://lnkd.in/es77BSnX Maarten Nelissen, karin broer, Sophie Konings, Wiebe van der Veen, Pepijn Verpaalen, Sietze Faber, Sjoerd Linders, Peter Furth, Eric Greweldinger, Vervoerregio Amsterdam, Lútsen de Jong Nika Haspels, Ursula Wyss Nivesh Dugar, Angela Francke, Dirk Lauwers, Meredith Glaser, Sébastien Marrec, Simone Brander, Markus Knauss, Wernher Brucks, Elke Schimmel Emma Stubbe Chris Bruntlett, Hans Godefrooij, Eric Plankeel

Last Tuesday, another new part of the network of ‘doorfietsroutes’, long distance cycle routes, was opened in Gemeente Haarlemmermeer between the urban settlements of Gemeente Uithoorn and Hoofddorp: the De Hoek cycle route. The new cycle path is 4m wide and is safely separated from the highway and the entrances to businesses. Alderman for Traffic and Transport Marja Ruigrok: "People are cycling more often, longer distances and faster due to the growing use of electric bicycles. That is why we are creating a network of long distance cycle routes. Routes like these makes cycling a comfortable and sustainable alternative to the car." More space for cyclists Since September 2023, work has been underway on the De Hoek cycle route. The cycle path along the parallel road (Oude Kruisweg) of the provincial highway was quite narrow and right next to the entrances to companies. The parallel road and the cycle path have been reversed so that cyclists and motorists no longer have to cross each other at the entrances of the companies. This increases cycling safety. In addition, the cycle path has been widened up to 4 meters, allowing fast and slower cyclists to overtake and pass each other more safely. And a separation has been placed between the provincial highway and the cycle path. Finally, the cycle path has been given a new layer of asphalt. During the work, the sewerage system under the Oude Kruisweg was also renewed. https://lnkd.in/eQ3BmhDN The cycle route was accomplished by collaboration of the municipality Gemeente Haarlemmermeer and Vervoerregio Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Transport Region. 30 seconds less delay for cyclists! That is achieved by adjusting the traffic lights at the intersection of Pontsteiger, Houtmankade and Tasmanstraat in Stadsdeel West Gemeente Amsterdam. The left turn for cyclists from the Pontsteiger ferry heading towards the city center is in two steps. Since the adjustment these two steps get green right after one another. This way cyclists can cycle on and that saves them about 30 seconds. And this time gain does not affect other road users. In the video how this adjustment is done.
