PR is Powerful (Agenda Setting Theory) Video: Rangers vs Enyimba As the project lead of NPFL promotions at StarTimes, the challenge is making Nigerians love their league passionately again – that mass audience appeal – which will, in return, increase viewership on StarTimes. Much has been sunk into the league (broadcast rights and production cost per match), but viewership is stagnant. It will require a huge budget for promotions, but budget constraints exist. I had to think out of the box. I applied mass communications’ agenda-setting theory - the media may not always be successful in telling people what to think, but it's stunningly successful in telling people what to think about. Through my management support, I set up a team of 60 sports journalists (30 radio sports analysts, 13 print & online platforms, 12 online sports writers/blogs, 5 TV stations). I reached out to them. To the print and online journalists, I solicited that we can make the league great again if we give it the same attention that AFCON 2023 enjoyed. If the league grows, it’s to the benefit of everyone. Interestingly, the media wants to see a booming league and willing to contribute to its growth. To them ‘it's ours, and we have a social responsibility to help it succeed.’ Last few days of May and 1st week of June, there was a massive blast of the league (with a special focus on the oriental derby) in print and online, supported by radio and TV, as well as on owned social media and a few NPFL enthusiasts on X/FB. I was writing and circulating 2 to 3 releases daily, and media friends also churning out their independent stories. The massive media blast sparked a nationwide media frenzy, dominating conversations across all channels. Influencers on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms weighed in, while bloggers dissected the events. Both Enyimba and Rangers capitalised on the attention with creative social media posts and offline activations. The oriental derby fueled heated discussions on radio and TV programs, ultimately spilling over into everyday conversations on the streets and online. And boom, the match witnessed a crowd that the stadium had never witnessed. It became the talk of the town, captivating the entire nation. PR matters. If the intent is built on positively shaping perception, not over-making your conversation so promotional, it could deliver tremendous results and save you huge costs. This video was given to us as an assignment in my MBA class to evaluate customer relations and managing difficult customers. Watching it instantly reminded me of a time over 10 years ago when I worked briefly with a leading bank in Lagos. I was on the transfer desk, responsible for both local and foreign transfers, Western Union, and basically everything related to money movement. The branch I worked at was located in a very busy part of Lagos, so we handled a heavy influx of customers every day. One day, a female customer in her mid-forties came in for a local transfer. Since there was a large crowd waiting with filled forms, I politely asked her to step aside and fill out her form in a designated area so I could attend to others. She got very upset and let loose. Now, I was known for my excellent customer service—so much so that I had customers who gifted the entire branch because of how well I treated them. Some were elderly people who came from abroad, and they often told me they had never experienced such exceptional service. In real life, I'm not a particularly patient person, but I understand that when it comes to work, professionalism is key. So, I stayed calm. I kept apologizing to her for asking her to move, even though she wouldn’t let it go. Eventually, I attended to her and thanked her for banking with us. A couple of weeks later, she came back to the branch, but this time to apologize to me. She explained that she had lost someone dear to her the day she was rude to me. She even told me she was an HR professional in the aviation industry. It was one of those rare moments where a difficult customer came back to apologize, and it stood out for me. If I make a post that Zenith bank or GTBank is looking for marketers, a great number of people will rush at the offer, they'll even reduce their ages to fit into the requirements. They'll be ready to wear suit and report to work 7am-5pm daily. They'll be ready to go anywhere possible to talk and get customers for the bank, They'll be ready to work under stress, and struggle to meet targets set for them...and so on, only for about 100k monthly. Tell this same person of another opportunity where he'll be his own boss, report to work when he wants, work at his pace, no targets, just market the opportunity to people, and earn more than 100k Weekly (400k monthly). Today I walked into my favorite fish shop. Another inquisitive customer walked in shortly after and, with a curious smile, asked the cashier, “Tiyembekeza Black Friday ife mailo” (we are waiting for the Black Friday promo). The cashier looked a little uncomfortable, and the attendant at the door, sensing the unease, muttered under her breath, “Tilibe Black Friday”(we don’t have Black Friday). The customer, visibly surprised, exclaimed, “Ati chani?! Simuza nkala na Black Friday imwe?!” (What do you mean?! You’re not doing Black Friday?!). With a polite but firm tone, the cashier replied, “Awe mummy, kulibe Black Friday use mailo.” (We won’t have a Black Friday promotion.) The customer bought her fish, though she still had a bewildered look on her face. As I watched this interaction, I couldn’t help but think: Zambian businesses this year have not had it easy. Making a bold move like opting out of Black Friday is no small decision, but it’s also a chance to rethink and tailor our approaches. The current business landscape calls for strategies that “fit our markets, protect our margins, and still delight our customers”.
