Story story? Story!!! Once upon a time in Delta, Nigeria, there was a big company called Techwarri. They thought their data was super safe, but one day, a smart hacker broke in and got hold of people's private info. When the news got out, everyone was scared. People's details were out there, and some got their money stolen. Techwarri had to work extra hard to make things right and make sure it never happened again. SEVEN (7) THINGS I LEARNT ABOUT DATA PROTECTION 1. Definition: Data protection is the guidance of humans in respect to their personal information. Personal data is anything that can identify you eg your bvn, phone number, facial recognition or even finger prints. 2. Data controller/processor: Data processing is everything you do as regard to personal data, whether it is stored, transferred, recorded, etc. A data controller is the entity that determines the purposes and means of processing personal data. While a data processor is the entity that processes personal data on behalf of the data controller. One can also be both a data controller and also a processor. 3. Data Subject: It is the person whose personal information is being processed. 4. Principles of data protection: There are seven (7) principles and I will just list them for they are self explanatory: 📌Lawfulness, fairness and transparency 📌Data minimization 📌Purpose limitation 📌Storage limitation 📌Accuracy 📌Accountability 📌Integrity and confidentiality Trust me they are self explanatory😊 5. Legal basis of data protection 📍Consent: the data subject has to give his or her consent before their information can be used by the data processor or controller. 📍Performance of contract 📍Vital interest: The data can be used without the consent of the data subject when it is in the interest of the data subject, say in a period of emergency. 📍Public interest: Say for the good of the society, eg census. 📍Legal obligation 📍Legitimate interest 6. Data subject rights: The data subject has the following rights; Right to information, to access, to erasure, data portability, rectification etc 7. Remedies to data protection: Although this is a personal learning but I will add it here. I took this course and it really broadened my knowledge on law and the system put in place in Nigeria and I hope to educate all about the Nigerian legal system "Navigating the Nigerian Legal Landscape: A Brief Overview The Nigerian legal system is a rich tapestry woven from a blend of customary law, Islamic law, and English common law. This unique fusion reflects the country's diverse cultural heritage and colonial history. At the apex of the legal system sits the Nigerian Constitution, which serves as the supreme law of the land, guiding and regulating all other laws within the country. One of the fundamental pillars of the Nigerian legal system is the judiciary, which is tasked with interpreting and applying the law. The judiciary comprises various courts, including the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and High Courts, each with specific jurisdictions and functions. These courts play a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice is served. Legal practitioners in Nigeria are governed by the Rules of Professional Conduct, which outline ethical standards and responsibilities for lawyers. Upholding integrity, confidentiality, and competence are paramount in maintaining the credibility and trustworthiness of legal professionals in the country. As Nigeria continues to evolve and grow, so too does its legal system, adapting to meet the changing needs of society. Can an Environment be pleasing without Trees: I tasks Nigerians on tree planting, environmental protection, and support green projects . I made the call during the tree planting exercise and KDU Greening Campaign commissioning, organised to commemorate the fourth convocation ceremony of the university. Climate change and its attendant challenges have, over the years, gained traction globally with the United Nations calling on member states and other organisations to take necessary action to arrest the situation.Thus, issues of global warming and the depletion of the ozone layer, drought, flood, erosion, deforestation, poor waste management systems and other human activities carried out by individuals, groups and industries have created negative impacts on the environment. To achieve the mission, the United Nations Climate Change Conference created a platform and opportunity for all nations to identify global solutions for limiting global temperature to 1.5 degrees. “Beyond national actions, securing our environment from the impending doom becomes a collective responsibility of all and sundry”, and therefore urged institutions, groups, and individuals to take up the challenge and be intentional towards the success of the green project. “Tree planting is an easy, cheap and important measure to mitigate the various effects of climate change,’’ our university took the step in line with the UNFCCC to inculcate the greening idea into the university system through the tree planting project. We plan to initiate the minds of the KDU community into this project by making each person plant a tree and nurture them to maturity. This is to enable us to create an ambiance conducive for both learning and leisure for everyone on campus and to make it a culture that lives with us, mostly for our students, even after graduation. I must say : ‘’Trees control erosion, flood, and storm, thereby saving the environment from havocs that these could cause us; trees give us clearer and fresher air/oxygen or carbon dioxide to breathe by improving the quality of the air. Also, trees absorb carbon monoxide, gas emissions, and fumes released from the usage of fossil fuels that pollute the air. Trees prevent water pollution and also act as a buffer for noise pollution. Trees conserve energy, support, and beautify our environment.’’ I, therefore, called on Nigerians ‘’to join the university in the tree planting project to engender freshness into KDU and beautify our campus.’’

I had a carryover in my 300 level that shattered my CGPA and my confidence. I was in the department one day when I got the news: I had failed POS 305. Failed POS 305? Me? Why? How? I asked my coursemate, baffled. I rehearsed the questions and my answers in my head and convinced myself it couldn’t be my script. I can’t fail. My coursemate advised me to settle the lecturer, but I refused. I’d been avoiding that lecturer since my first year. I wouldn't go and meet him now, talk more of settling him. If I failed, I’d rewrite the exam, I told myself. But I didn’t realize the impact failing would have on me. When the results were released, I had indeed failed. I cried for days, questioning why. I wasn’t happy with God; I had prayed against failure and believed I wrote well. How did I fail? My hopes of graduating with a first-class vanished. Shame followed. How could I sit with juniors I had tutored, who called me 'Mama'? How would I rewrite this exam? Doubts crept in. I started to believe I was a failure, becoming a shadow of my former self. I was destabilised. Just before I could give up, I turned to God for help and was reminded: I may have failed, but I am not a failure. I braced up and showed up. I couldn’t attend classes, but I collected notes, studied, rehearsed past questions, and prayed. When the time came, I faced the lecturer in the exam hall and passed excellently. Dear All, I don’t know what life has thrown at you, but remember this; 🔷Failure is Temporary: It doesn’t define your worth or capabilities. It’s a setback, not the end. 🔷How you respond to failure shapes your future. Persevere, adapt, and keep moving forward. 🔷Use failure as a learning opportunity. Reflect on what went wrong and how you can improve. 🔷Don’t hesitate to ask for help or guidance. Surround yourself with positive influences who believe in you. 🔷Trust in God. How can I be a copy(righter) when I don't shoot movies? This was me 4 years ago when I first heard about becoming a copywriter during the pandemic lockdown. Fast forward to today, and I'm grinning at my laptop screen, staring at a badge that puts me in the top 10% of over 18 million freelancers on Upwork. How did a clueless microbiology student end up as a Top Rated copywriter? It's a story of persistence, consistency, and a never-give-up attitude... It all started in 2020 when the Covid derailed my Msc. at the University of Ilorin. With the whole world on pause, I had 2 options: A. Learn a skill that could be useful tomorrow (The hard way) B. Stay at home enjoying my mum's jollof rice and doing nothing (Easy way) I decided to go with option A. Enter copywriting - a field I knew absolutely nothing about. I dove in headfirst, buying every copywriting course I could find (If I can afford it)& devoured copywriting books from pdf.com. But like many newcomers, I fell for the "get-rich-quick" promises. When success didn't come overnight, my enthusiasm died a natural death. For 2 solid years, I had nothing to show for it. No clients. No interviews. Just a number of so called winning proposal swipes. Despite this, I kept at it, even after securing a full scholarship for Master's in Molecular Microbiology at KIU, Uganda. But the copywriting bug had bitten me. Despite the academic demands I kept one foot in the freelancing world. Sending one Upwork proposal per week for jobs I felt I was perfect for. But then, in August, 2022, something happened. I landed my first gig on Upwork, a $10 job. I was over the moon! A week later, another $12 project came my way. I thought I'd cracked the code. Spoiler alert: I hadn't. What followed was 8 months of drought. But here's where it gets interesting. Instead of giving up, I doubled down. I invested in a course that would change everything - Andy Mukolo's FCI. At 50,000 Naira, it wasn't cheap, but it was the game-changer I needed. The course was intense. Between my studies and copywriting, I initially struggled to implement it fully. But I knew I had to make this work. I'd invested too much time and money to quit. So, I doubled down. I re-read materials, rewatched videos, & even hand-copied sales letters. (I spent 25 days in June-July 2023 writing out all 25 chapters of the Boron Letters by Gary Halbert as instructed by Andy Mukolo) In January 20, 2024, A $100 gig was all that changed the narrative. The reasons for this are quite numerous. The most obvious of them being my perceived desire of a "there" that I must first get to before I can decide to put myself out there. BALANCING FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS WITH ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE; LIFE OF A NIGERIAN STUDENT When I first saw my 100L 1st semester results I was elated not just because the results were good-we offered about 13 courses and all my results were either A or B- but because it felt good to know that I still had it in me, despite being non-academic for about 5 years (you see, I left secondary school in 2016 and i didn't gain admission into Uni until 2021) I felt that i wasn't at my academic peak yet, I haven't even used my abido shaker (hehehehe), yet i was able to pull off these good grades, I was filled with so much enthusiasm and optimism. I knew I would only get better as I acclimatize more to the academic environment (or so I thought) Bouncing in this euphoria, I forgot one essential thing I had -financial stability- this was what made it easy for me to be able to fully focus on school and school alone, i wasn't thinking of how I'll feed, as a fresher i still had enough foodstuff, i still had some money I saved up from my years of labor and the funds i was gifted by my well wishers. So life didn't really hit me until 100L second semester, when it dawned on me that if I want to stay alive in this school I'll need to get a job, the ravishing hunger I witnessed that period was unprecedented, I couldn't fix my gaze on books without hunger blurring my sight, at that point school was suddenly not the most important thing to me. It was survival. Thus, I got a job, didn't attend classes frequently and then began my academic decline (and I don't think I've recovered up till this moment) especially being a law student attending classes is a conditio sine qua non for attaining good grades, and it became something I couldn't do. Consequently, my grades suffered, I didn't have any carryovers though, all thanks to God) However, the C finish was too much (pun intended, lol) This is something the average Nigerian student is confronted with- balancing their financial needs with procuring good grades- and maintaining this balance is very difficult because the scale always tilts towards one scale pan, most times to the financial stability and when this happens the academic output of the student suffers. The students are not able to enter their prime or achieve their peak academic form because they have to survive first. In fact, a close friend of mine is a victim of this struggle for balance, he is probably the smartest, most charismatic person I've met in my life, tailor made for this legal profession. Unfortunately. he never got to show the world these traits because he spends more time at his place of work than at school. So to all students out there who can relate to this, I don't particularly have any word of advice on how to scale through this phase because I'm still trying to navigate through the experience and come out on top but I remain optimistic that we will win in every area of our student life, academically and financially. THE TORT OF PASSING OFF Bro. Emeka, someone is using the name of your business to promote his own trade and you're just there believing that vengeance is of the Lord. Aunty Chioma, someone just imitated the design of your beautiful hair cream product and is confusing people with a fake apperance of your product, hereby causing a decline in your profits and you're just there crying to Mama Nkechi. Do you know the position of the law on these issues? A little knowledge on the tort of passing off won't hurt, read on! The tort of passing off arises when in a competitive business setting, a defendant(Emeka's competitor) represents, markets, sales or advertises his goods, products or services as that of the plaintiff(Emeka), thereby deceiving the public to believe that his goods and services are the same as Emeka'. This usually involves taking undue advantage of the plaintiff's goodwill and reputation. The law is clear on this. In the case of Reddaway v Banhan, the court held that No body has the right to represent his goods as the goods of someone else. This basically gives you the right to own your products, services and goods and use them only to your advantage. The law encourages ingenuity and seeks to prohibit people from stealing other people's work and using it to their advantage. Emeka and Chioma, you're saved. Oya, smile😂 Passing off does not only occur when you trade with the name of someone's business, neither is it limited to when you imitate the apperance of someone's product. There are many forms of passing off and these includes: A. Producing and marketing fake products using the plaintiff's trademark or an imitation of someone's work. Are you in the habit of stealing someone's unique business symbol, just know that you can be held liable😑 B. Copying or imitating the plaintiff's advertisement. My fellow Nigerians, come and hear this now😂. Let me not talk. C. False attribution of authorship: Those of you who want your book to sell quickly and you would quickly attach Chimamanda Adichie's name for it to sell fast, better repent😑 D. Selling inferior or expired goods of the plaintiff as current stock: Kilodey??? By doing this, are you aware that you are ruining the plaintiff's good name; a name he might have built painstakingly. Better repent😌 I know someone here is encountering this😂. I would advice that you go get a lawyer, nwannem jee court😂. Stop disturbing Mama Nkechi 😌. The court can grant you injunctions to stop that person from using your product to make gains, the court can also grant you compensations and even help you collect from that person profits he had made through your product. 18,000 people now follow me on LinkedIn. I found out last week. However, it took me five years before I started winning on LinkedIn. I opened my account in December 2014 after completing the NYSC Scheme, hoping to get a job here. The job never came, so I’d visit the app occasionally. When I do, I’ll just scroll mindlessly. This app that people said works wonders for professionals wasn’t working for me. Just before the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, I resolved to grow and elevate my personal brand on LinkedIn. I patiently took the time to study how the platform works. I observed what other creators were doing and adapted some of it to my work. Engaging the content of other creators was a daily routine. I started creating content that was relatable to my audience, using storytelling. I once created content for 90 consecutive days from the 1st of January 2022. This was a personal challenge that strengthened my ability to create content effortlessly. One-on-one engagement in the DMs of some of my connections on weekly basis was a regular activity for me. I took my LinkedIn growth a step higher by connecting with some of my LinkedIn connections at offline events organized by the likes of Seun Odegbami, Damilola Felicia Badmus, Priscilia Amadi ICSN (Service Culture Evangelist), and Omobabinrin Adeola Osideko in 2021, 2022 and 2023. This is what my process looked like that solved my problem of LinkedIn obscurity. The pay-off? 10 months after I took LinkedIn seriously in 2020, I got a brief here to represent a client in a real estate dispute against a major real esate company in Lagos. My firm won that case in Court the following year 2021 and we were handsomely rewarded for our efforts. Since then, getting briefs from LinkedIn in Nigeria and abroad especially in the USA, South Africa, the UK, and Malaysia has been a regular occurrence for me. DAY 6 AS AN INTERN AT HTSFVIMP 8.0 TOPIC: Blockchain for social good; the role of women in driving innovation. SPEAKER: Ms Linda Obi . This particular class makes me resonate with the popular saying - women helping women! I must say that Ms Linda Obi is one woman that has great passion for helping women in discovering their full potentials. I'm so glad to have been a part of this class. I'm sure it has birthed something positive in me. Here are a few things I learnt from this thought provoking class; - Blockchain technology can be harnessed to create positive societal impacts and women have the role to be at the forefront of this transformation. Women can actively participate as masterminds of innovative technologies that would have positive impact on the society. - Blockchain has the potential to revolutionalised different sectors. It is a decentralised digital ledger that records transactions across multiple computers. The features of blockchain includes; decentralisation, immutability, transparency, traceability amongst others. - Blockchain for social good connotes using blockchain technologies to address societal challenge and promote positive changes. - In the health sector, blockchain can solve problems in terms of traceable health records. Technology can serve a bridge of access between patients and doctors whereby patients are able to consult doctors from the comforts of their homes minimising physical interaction and transportation cost. The health records of such patient can be stored on blockchain for traceability. - Blockchain can also be instrumental in verifying academic records as long as it has been uploaded on the platform. This would help in preventing fraud and make it easier for employers to verify qualifications. - Blockchain can be incorporated in the voting system which would enhance transparency, reduce corruption and promote good governance. It can also help in budgeting. - Protecting digital identities on the blockchain can safeguard individuals especially in regions where identity theft and fraud are prevalent. Nigerians cm potentially benefit from this. - There is a serious underrepresentation of women in tech and blockchain sector. There's a need for women to pioneer tech innovations using blockchain for social good. In conclusion, I'm encouraged to be actively involved by exploring projects and initiatives focused on social good. I'd also leverage on opportunities to learn more on blockchain and it's potential to transform several sectors.
