MTN, others get permits to generate electricity The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued permits to Golden Penny Power Limited, MTN Communications Nigeria Limited, Havenhill Synergy, and others for mini-grid electricity generation. The NERC said it issued nine new off-grid generation licences in the first quarter of 2024 with a gross capacity of 109.69 megawatts and three new trading licences. According to a report by the commission, Golden Penny Power Limited got a licence to build six off-grid gas plants in Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Cross River states. The total capacity is 100MW. Also, MTN was granted a permit to build four captive generation plants across Lagos State with 15.94MW capacity. Aside from MTN, SweetCo Foods Limited, African Steel Mills Nigeria Limited, West African Ceramics Limited, Royal Engineered Stones Limited, and Armilo Plastics Limited were permitted to generate captive power. “Captive power generation permits are issued to entities that aim to own and maintain power plants for generating power for consumption and not for sale to a third party. The commission issued nine captive power generation permits in 2024/Q1 with a total nameplate capacity of 52.57MW. Other licensed companies for mini-grids are Daybreak Power Solutions, TIS Renewable Energy Limited, Auro Nigeria Private Limited, Watts Exchange Limited, Centum Dopemu Energy Services Ltd, DMD Electric Limited Lagos State. The commission said it has continued to encourage the development and utilisation of renewable energy by issuing permits and registration certificates for mini-grid development. A permit is issued to a mini-grid developer for the construction, operation, maintenance, and where applicable ownership of mini-grids with distribution capacity above 100 kilowatts and generation capacity up to 1MW. I solidly believe that if this is well implemented the pressure to supply power to some certain areas in Nigeria will be tackled because I have seen it work in places like India.

If Your Area Has Not Been Seeing PHCN Power For Sometimes, Here Is Why WHY MOST BUSINESSES WILL NOT HAVE LIGHT SOON IN NIGERIA The answer is very simple. PHCN has bands A,B,C,D,E Band A are the top priority customers and government has mandated the distribution companies to make sure band A customers get a minimum of 20 hours power before th y can bill the customers at the new rate So, Power distribution companies have commitment to give the band A customers 20 hours light and because they don't have enough power to give band A to meet the 20 hours obligations, they have no other options than to divert power from bands E, D C majorly and Band B sometimes to Band A This is more like taking power from the poor to make sure the rich have power because the rich can afford to pay the higher power rate. The solution would have been to increase rate across all.bands then set minimum energy supply each band must get As it currently stands the incentive for power companies is to divert power from the poor to the rich because the rich in band A can afford to pay the very high band A tarrif. If your Area has not been having power recently, here is the reason The battle will be to get your feeder upgraded to band A if you want to enjoy improved power supply

It was an interesting time of learning, relearning and unlearning at the just concluded USAID Power Africa Growing Green Jobs career fair. Yesterday being the finale, 9 groups of stakeholders brainstormed and came up with recommendations to harness the energy resources available in various states in Nigeria to aid the clean energy transition. I was opportune to make the presentation on the bio-energy potentials of Plateau State on behalf of group 7. Plateau State has the potential to provide with round the year vegetable to Nigerians and exports if these vegetables are properly preserved when in season. The rotten vegetable wastes can be converted into bio- fuels to power dehydrators and cooling systems to preserve excess vegetable ahead of the rainy days. I must commend the team at USAID and Habiba Balogun Consulting (HBC) for putting together such a fantastic and highly needed initiative. I am advocating for USAID, European Union, Power Africa, Richard Nelson, United Nations UN Energy ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), Nigeria's Energy Transition Plan (ETP) Federal Ministry of Power and other stakeholders to support and harness this potential. #powerafrica #cleanenergy #energytransition

Breaking! #aedcelectricty @aedcelectricity now charges for personal generators in my house. I was billed N300,000 for my generator. My meter was disconnected and it won't be connected until I pay. @NIGERIACPC @officialEFCC @icpcnigeria #efcc #icpc #nercng @NERCNG is that fair? #aedcelectricty @aedcelectricity has never failed to amuse me since I started using prepaid meter, 2015. In 2016, I was billed some money for a debt on prepaid meter. In 2017, they came to accuse me of bypass which was fruitless. In 2019, they came again fruitlessly to charge me with bypass. In 2019, they posted manual bill for my prepaid meter. In 2024, the allegation changed to energy theft. Without any proof but relying on the lopsided law that empower them to allege without challenge, my meters were disconnected to pay 300,000 before re-connection. There must be an end to bad governance, intimidation, disregard to the rights of customers, due process.
