𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝟓𝟔 STORY TIME: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐦😊 Emeka had been a cash officer at 𝐀𝐁𝐂 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤 for five years. He was responsible for managing the bank's vault cash, including counting and reconciling the cash at the beginning and end of each day. One busy Friday morning, Emeka was in a rush to get the bank's doors open on time. He hastily counted the cash in the vault, but didn't bother to reconcile the figures or verify the denominations. Big mistake❗️❗️. Later that day, the Internal Control Officer, Nneoma, conducted a surprise cash count audit. She discovered that Emeka's count was short by ₦500,000 (approximately $1,200 USD). Nneoma immediately escalated the issue to the bank's management, and Emeka was summoned to explain the discrepancy. Emeka was mortified. He apologized profusely and explained that he had been in a rush that morning. However, Nneoma reminded him that cash counting was a critical control procedure that required attention to detail. The bank's management took disciplinary action against Emeka, and he was required to undergo additional training on cash handling procedures. Emeka learned a valuable lesson that day: attention to detail is crucial when it comes to cash handling, and shortcuts can have serious consequences. It is only natural for everyone to hop on a trend and it appears the Nigerian government is no different. I mean, cybersecurity is trending more than ever as if there has never been a need for it but perhaps it's mainly because we are inundated with cyber crimes at an unprecedented and escalating rate. But what in the world do we need a cybersecurity levy for?! I did my research, as far as Google Search can show at the time of writing this post, Nigeria is the only country charging a cybersecurity levy. What for?!!! In my opinion, Nigeria's decision to introduce the cybersecurity levy alongside the existing NITDA levy is unnecessary and redundant given the presence of the NITDA levy. The cybersecurity levy appears to be an additional financial burden on businesses without clear justification. This move surely raises concerns about the government's understanding of the existing levies and the impact on businesses already struggling with economic challenges. The lack of transparency and clarity surrounding the need for the cybersecurity levy has left many questioning its purpose. With the NITDA levy already in place to support the development of information technology in Nigeria, the introduction of a separate cybersecurity levy seems unjustified. Businesses are likely to face increased financial strain without tangible benefits or assurances regarding the effectiveness of the new levy in enhancing cybersecurity measures. Overall, the introduction of the cybersecurity levy in addition to the NITDA levy appears to be a misguided decision that could hinder rather than promote cybersecurity efforts in Nigeria. The lack of clear rationale and potential overlap between the two levies raise doubts about the government's approach to cybersecurity funding. Yesterday I was discussing with a business friend regarding the price of Dangote's diesel and he responded that the price ₦1,200 per litre is too high but likely the price will come down as dollar is now ₦1,000. Waking up this morning, my contact in Dangote Industries Limited told me the price of Dangote's diesel has dropped to ₦1,000 per litre for 1 million and ₦950 per litre for over 5 million. Wow. This is a welcome development. As the Naira appreciates against dollar, the price of Dangote's fuels would come down, likewise other commodities in the market. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) aggressive monetary policy adjustments and the implementation of new market strategies have been central to the recovery of the Naira from its prior losses. Unfortunately for the business people, the Naira appreciated faster than their expectations against the United States’ Dollar. And that has put them in tight situations. You can't send dollars to China at the rate of ₦1,500 and your goods arrived Nigeria when dollar is ₦1,000. And immediately you reduce the prices of your products. Who does that?. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria anticipates that the Dangote refinery will lead to a potential decrease in the price of diesel, potentially reaching around N700 per litre. Hammed Fashola, the National Vice President of IPMAN, expressed his gratitude towards the Dangote refinery for lowering the price of diesel from above N1,200 to N1,000. “It is a good development, a welcome development. That is what we expected. Even we are still expecting that diesel will still come down more. Because if you look at the dollar rate to the naira now, the currency is doing well against the dollar. The exchange rate now is almost N1,000 on the black market. We still expect that the dollar will come down more,” The leader of IPMAN elaborated on the reduction in price by pointing out that the removal of obstacles such as shipping challenges and Customs duties, due to local production, has led to this positive change. “When you look at the diesel being produced here, there are lots of factors that have come to play; like the issue of shipment, the issue of tax, Customs and others. All those are not there again. So, we marketers, we are expecting diesel to come to like N700 per litre; that is our prayer and at that level, it will be a blessing to everybody. I had a meeting with my boss Emery Abayomi Agunbiade this morning. The meeting though short but very productive. "Tell me one thing that is not risky. Taking action is risky, and not taking action is also risky." This, I murmur to the ears of Ajoke. I met Ajoke during my NYSC time in Taraba. She was my bunkmate, a stunning brown-skinned girl whose long legs seemed to dance with every step. The day she walked into our dorm, her presence was magnetic. We bonded over late-night talks and shared laughs under the mosquito nets. Ajoke had a way of making the simplest moments unforgettable. After camp, I was redeployed to Lagos, while she stayed in Jalingo. Despite exchanging promises to keep in touch, life got in the way, and we lost contact. Years passed. Then, yesterday, out of the blue, a TikTok notification lit up my phone. My heart raced as I saw the familiar name. It was Ajoke. She had seen one of my real estate videos and was curious how a Human Anatomist had transitioned to real estate. As we caught up, the years melted away. Our connection was instant, like picking up an old, cherished book and finding the story just as compelling as ever. But something in her voice hinted at more than just curiosity. I am Jercy Kpogho a graduate of ProductDive via the 3MTT Nigeria tech training as a Product Manager. I am motivated for learning tech skills so as to enhance my skill sets to meet the demands of today's reality. Mostly due to the fact that technical skills aren't a prerequisite for product management, but having the basic understanding of technology has allowed me to collaborate seamlessly with software developers and engineers. I started with no basic knowledge of data skills, but now I know how to manage one product and features across different platforms. How to organize the development of product to match the way users consume it split up across different experiences, by keeping a product aligned and synced across diverse platforms. As a Product Manager I can now oversees the development of products for organizations or brand. Taking responsibility for guiding a cross-functional team to work cross-functionally to ensure that everybody's align and work towards a common goal: to create, develop and implement a product. Which often refers to a service or item being sold to consumers and can be either virtual, physical or both. I can now perform research to determine customer requirements and preferences. Creating and communicating a strategy for the development of a product. I can also define a product vision and roadmap, by overseeing the product development team for the duration of a project. Delegating tasks to team members and collaborating with the different departments to solve development and operational issues. As a Product Manager I am the function within an organization that's responsible for the overall success of a product. And I must take on a strategic role in developing an overall vision for the product; as well has a plan for how that vision will be realized. As the tech world is changing rapidly, I am constantly ready to keep new trends and technologies on my radar. By evaluating options and understanding the implications of the new tech on product development. Being able to consider the pros and cons of new technologies when making development decisions. Reflecting on my experience so far, I want to be grateful to God, to thank 3MTT Nigeria for giving me the opportunity and platform to discover myself in my tech journey; which benefits are immeasurable. When I was growing up, my mum had a wholesale store somewhere in Lagos Island market. Whenever her customers came in from the eastern part of the country, the first thing she got them was food and drinks.... Alot of them would come into Lagos with a night bus then come straight from the bus park to shop in the market ; the food and drinks were always handy. Once they ate, they just always settled in and bought from her. It was one of the ways she nurtured her relationships with customers. Today, the game hasn't changed much and thankfully, we have alot data to work with now ....
