𝗔 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 GDG Lagos 2024, 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱.
6 years ago, attending GDG Lagos introduced me to machine learning and open source, sparking my journey into Data Science and Machine Learning.
This year, I had the privilege of returning as a speaker at West and Central Africa's biggest developer conference with over 3.9k+ in-person attendees across 2 days. I had the honor of delivering a one-hour session titled "The Role of Developer Relations in AI Product Success."
My talk highlighted:
🔹The critical role DevRel plays in driving the growth, DevRel definition by Mary Thengvall, and adoption of AI/ML products
🔹3 practical case studies from AI companies focusing on APIs, open source, and computer vision.
🔹Key metrics, tools, and techniques for aligning DevRel strategies with business objectives.
The link to my slide will be in the comment section. I'm glad I got several amazing feedback as regards my slides and session from my survey, where the audience was asking to create a separate workshop on presentation.
I took the opportunity to spotlight some incredible friends and peers in the AI/ML space, such as Marisa Smith, PhD, Maria Khalusova, Marlene Mhangami, Jay M., Harpreet Sahota 🥑, Tony K., Jenifer De Figueiredo, and Patrick Löber. I also shared how inspirations like 👩🏻💻 Mikiko B., Merve Noyan, Richmond Alake, and Logan Kilpatrick have shaped my journey. Their work, achievements, and contributions have inspired me, and I share their impact with the audience.
As part of my session, I reflected on my growth as a data scientist, Python and ML advocate, and community builder, aiming to inspire fellow African developers and ML enthusiasts. I ended with a quote that encapsulates my philosophy in summary:
"Just as data serves as the backbone of AI, the community serves as the backbone of innovation."
To close, I hosted a giveaway of two exceptional data science books authored by fellow Africans:
🔹 Building Data-Driven Applications with Danfo.js: A Practical Guide to Machine Learning with JavaScript by Rising Odegua and Stephen Oni
🔹 Exploratory Data Analysis with Python Cookbook by Ayodele Oluleye
This was more than just a giveaway—it was a call to action to encourage more Africans to write technical books on Data, AI, and ML and to inspire others to explore, learn, and create African-led solutions in the Data and AI space.
This weekend, I’m thrilled to continue this journey at Google Developer Groups (GDG) Ibadan, where I was invited to join a panel session on "Responsible AI: The Use of AI for Positive Impact and the Greater Good."
Reflecting on how far I’ve come since my first DevFest Lagos, I’m reminded of the power of community, inspiration, and the opportunities that arise when we share knowledge and uplift one another.
