Last week, the DevTrain Volunteers Academy (DVA) Network held her much-anticipated Annual General Meeting (AGM), and it was a remarkable event filled with inspiration, recognition, and innovation! The Executive Director delivered a thought-provoking presentation titled “GROW Model,” exploring the model’s application, benefits, and limitations. An engaging Q&A session followed, sparking insightful discussions. Awards of Excellence were presented to members who showcased outstanding commitment to DevTrain and the development sector, alongside certificates of committed service to outgoing exco members for their dedicated leadership. Network members also shared valuable ideas on improving, developing, and sustaining the academy and the network. The AGM concluded with elections that saw 8 leadership positions filled, including the historic election of our First female Network Leader! Over the week, stakeholders, experts, and participants gathered to explore innovative pathways to enhance fiscal accountability and transparency, ultimately driving investment and citizen participation in governance. DevTrain, represented by the Executive Director, Suunen Atsuwe and the Communications Intern, Jeffrey Ogah attended the North Central Zonal Summit of Fiscal Responsibility Institutions, organized by the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), funded by the European Union (EU), and implemented by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Program (RoLAC II)/International IDEA (International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance) held in Jos, Plateau State. Day 1 Highlights: The summit opened with an inspiring address by Chief Victor Muruako, Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, who emphasized the critical role of citizen participation in democracy. Keynote speaker Mr. Sule Musa shed light on essential fiscal governance concepts, advocating for inclusive policies through methods like public hearings, town hall meetings, and referenda. Discussions tackled challenges like apathy and lack of transparency, concluding with actionable recommendations for fostering engagement and inclusivity. Day 2 Highlights: Renowned economist Prof. Ken Ife delivered an impactful keynote on leveraging fiscal accountability to attract investments, outlining strategies to address Nigeria’s economic challenges. A dynamic panel session followed, focusing on making citizen participation a reality in fiscal decision-making, offering practical strategies for transparency and accountability. This summit underscored that empowered citizens are the cornerstone of accountable governance. DevTrain at the WEP Boot Camp in Abuja Last week, Gaadi Iember our Project Officer represented DevTrain at a Boot Camp organized by the Women Environmental Program in Abuja. The event featured engaging sessions on: - Environmental justice and human rights - Gender dynamics in tackling environmental challenges - Leveraging media tools and technology to combat environmental injustice - Exploring environmental policies and regulations Participants also enjoyed interactive games like PLAN (Play, Learn, and Act Now), which simplified complex environmental issues and provided actionable solutions.
