  • Are you in the idea stage of your startup? If yes, using the right name for your startup can have a significant impact on your success. The wrong name can result in insurmountable business and legal hurdles. But guess what? We've got you! Here are some helpful tips on how to come up with a winning name for your startup; 1. Do not make use of a generic name. Trying to use your personal name as your brand name could constitute problems for you when you apply for trademark registration. 2. Know the restrictions put in place by corporate affairs commission and adhere strictly to it. There are some names restricted from use by the corporate affairs commission in Nigeria, names that include savings, government(federal, state or municipal) and a number of other things fall in this category. 3. Don't pick a name that is similar to a competitor's name. Not only could this bring you into a avoidable law suit, it will present you as a chronic copycat. 4. Be sure to pick a name that people can spell and pronounce. Don't twist people's tongue in a bid to be unique with your brand name. 5. Desist from constant change of name: After the launch of your startup, resist the urge to change your name to at every given opportunity. It presents your company as inconsistent and unserious. You must understand that the above tips is for your own good and ignoring them can throw you back to square one. Don't be a nonchalant startup founder. Protect your brand by choosing a name that the law can protect! #startup #lawyer #startuplawyer #tips

  • We have come to realize that business owners fear litigation more than anything else. But guess what? A lawsuit is not a death sentence! A common misconception is that lawsuits spells doom for businesses but that's untrue. While lawsuits may cause a strain on the business owner, it will not cause the business to go under if handled by a competent lawyer. The truth is, there is no law that protects you from being sued as a business owner. As long as you carry on business anyone can bring a legal action against your business either bogus or real. Panic is not the next course of action when you discover that you have been sued. Here are tips on what to do in the event of a lawsuit: 1. Don't ignore it: ignoring a lawsuit won't make it go away. As a matter of fact, ignoring it will cause you more problems in the long run. A default judgment could be entered against you by the judge based on the evidence presented by the other party if you pull a no-show and you will be left with no choice but to comply with the judgement or make an appeal. 2. Read the complaint: carefully go through the details of the complaint against you. Know the person suing you and the reason why you are being sued. Thoroughly read through the document to see if there is a deadline for you to respond to the summon. 3. Contact your lawyer: there is nothing better than having quality representation during a lawsuit. Hand over the court processes to your lawyer and let him determine the next course of action. Do not resort to Google generated legal advice or attempt to go at it on your own. The price you will pay to hire a lawyer is worth it. Trust us, your business will survive litigation provided you invest in a competent lawyer. #startupbusiness #abilegalbarristers #businesslawyer #startuplawyer

  • Dear Creative, Taxation is the price of civilization. Do you know that as a creative, you have an obligation to pay taxes to the government? The creative industry is the new oil well and the government sure wants a part of the proceeds. We know for a fact that creativity has become a way of generating multiple streams of income and honestly we are genuinely happy that you are making money. You have probably wondered: "do I have any tax obligation as a creative?" Yes you do! Surprised? Oh, you are thinking "I work from home and I'm not under anyone's employment, why should I pay taxes?" Here are two of the taxes required for people in the creative industry: 1. Personal Income Tax: If your annual income from content creation exceeds a certain threshold(N800,000), you need to pay income tax. This includes income from freelancing, content creation, and other creative ventures. 2. Value Added Tax (VAT): If you sell goods or services through your social media platforms, you need to charge and remit VAT. In the words of Albert Einstein: "The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax" but we hope that we have helped you understand the world of taxes. There is absolutely no reason for you to thank us, simply like, save and share this post with other creatives like yourself. Happy Monday! #taxes #nigeriancreatives #freelance #smallbusiness #taxtips #nigeria

  • Data is gold and many things could go wrong the data if your users ends up in the wrong hands. Data is the heartbeat of tech companies like yours and if you want your tech startup to stand the test of time, you must take the necessary measures to protect it. Ways to protect your tech startup include; ✓ Have a privacy notice on your website. ✓ Ensure that a term of use contract is available on your website for its users. ✓ Secure the backend of your website. ✓ Have a privacy policy. ✓ Have an incident response protocol or a data breach protocol. ✓ Have a Data Protection Officer on your team. Are you an organization that collects data? Now is your chance to prioritize data protection and user safety. Don't take compliance for granted. Be proactive. Be compliant. Be considerate of your end users. Happy Thursday! #data #dataprotection #dataprivacy
