LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Family and friends of a man killed in a police shooting demand justice and answers from Las Vegas police about why an officer shot him while he was struggling with an intruder.
Brandon Durham, 43, was shot multiple times including in the head inside his home on the 6900 block of Wine River Drive before 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
LVMPD said officers responded to the residence after receiving reports of a shooting.
Officers kicked down the door to enter the home after hearing screams from inside, officials said.
Body camera footage released on Thursday shows Officer Alexander Bookman, 26, walking inside the home and finding Durham struggling for control of a knife with 31-year-old Alejandra Boudreaux.
Bookman is recorded on camera saying to drop the knife before he shot at Durham who fell to the ground. After, Bookman fired five more rounds at Durham who was not moving in the video.
“I’m disgusted with the Metropolitan Police,” Isabella Durham,15, Durham’s daughter said while addressing the media on Thursday. “The fact that they wrongfully shot my dad and then tried to spin the narrative to cover them, saying that there were gunshots there, that he had a knife, none of that is true.”
Isabella said she was in the home during the break-in and her father called 911 on her phone. Isabella locked herself in her room to hide, as Durham instructed.
News 3 exclusively obtained surveillance video on Tuesday from a neighbor showing the moments leading to the break-in. A person is seen on camera wandering around the outside of the home. The camera recorded the sound of glass breaking multiple times before police arrived around 12:40 a.m.
“The violence that occurred here was under someone who was extremely, extremely angry and extremely violent,” Isabella said. “And I am disgusted in how the Metropolitan Police told my father, after killing him, to stay down. Knowing, treating him like he was the suspect in the situation, he was the victim, and I'm disgusted that the Metropolitan Police will allow me to live fatherless for the rest of my life.”
The shooting marked the 13th shooting by an LVMPD officer in 2024.
Durham’s registered domestic partner Rachael Gore, who was not legally married to Durham but considered him her husband, spoke during the family’s press conference outside Durham’s home on Thursday. She blames a lack of training by the police
“What are you looking at? Not the colors of the clothes, you're looking at the color of the skin and that's why he's dead,” Gore said. “That's why we don't have him here.”
Friends and family tell News 3 that Durham, who is a Black man, moved to Las Vegas when he was 18 and has been a realtor for the last 10 years. He’s described as a chef and family man, doing what he needed to provide for his family.
“Dance when he walks, he smiles, he grooves, he's happy,” Diane Wright, Durham’s sister said “Smiling, he's happy.”
A GoFundMe page said Durham’s sudden passing has left an unimaginable void for Gore, his daughter Bella, and 13-year-old stepson Branden.
