The Southeast Asia's Green Economy 2024 Report: Moving the Needle was launched yesterday at Ecosperity Week 2024, and is jointly produced by Bain & Company, GenZero, Standard Chartered Bank and Temasek. The report shares that Southeast Asia has a window of opportunity that it needs to seize today to leverage the green transition for competitive and economic growth. It highlighted the top 13 investable ideas across four sectorial themes: Nature and Agriculture, Power, Transport, and Buildings. 1. Regenerative agriculture practice 2. Alternate wetting and drying for rice cultivation 3. Precision agriculture practice 4. Forest conservation 5. Peatlands conservation 6. Utility-scale solar and wind energy 7. Transmission and distribution infrastructure expansion 8. Captive self-generation of solar with storage 9. Virtual power agreements and interconnections 10. Electric passenger vehicles and charging infrastructure 11. Agricultural waste stream for biofuels production 12. Energy efficiency improvements for data centers 13. Larger companies in Singapore are on track for mandatory climate reporting in FY 2025. A study by Singapore's Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) and the Sustainable and Green Finance Institute (SGFIN) found that larger listed companies are making good progress in climate reporting. The study examined climate-related disclosures of 51 larger companies listed on the SGX Mainboard, for FY 2022 based on the TCFD framework. Companies that exhibit strong alignment with TCFD framework will be well-positioned to fulfil ISSB-aligned reporting requirements in FY 2025. Key findings include: Governance - 94% of companies have assigned roles or formed committees to deal with climate risks and opportunities, demonstrating a strong commitment. Strategy - 88% of companies have disclosed the physical and transitional risks related to climate, but only 61% have disclosed the related opportunities. - Only 16% of companies have fully disclosed how they incorporated climate risks in their financial planning. Risk Management - 71% of companies have fully disclosed how they identified, assessed, and managed climate-related risks. - However, only 24% made full disclosures on the significance of climate-related risks compared to other risks and only 10% explained their potential magnitude. Metrics and Targets - Companies studied did well, with disclosures for Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions, at 96%, 100% and 59%, respectively. - 80% of companies have set targets and the timeframes to reduce emissions. The Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) has released an illustrative sustainability report aligned with the GRI and ISSB standards. Developed in collaboration with Singapore Exchange Regulation (SGX RegCo), the report serves as a practical guide for GRI reporters to integrate the climate-related disclosure requirements under ISSB standards. Key areas covered include transition reliefs and proportionality mechanisms in the ISSB standards, providing flexibility for companies as they adopt the new disclosure requirements. From 2025, SGX RegCo will gradually phase in mandatory ISSB-aligned disclosures for listed issuers, supporting companies in managing the shift. The Sustainability Reporting Review of 2023 showed a marked difference in the performance of SGX listed companies’ sustainability practices vis-à-vis the 2019 report. Additional parameters i.e., climate-related disclosures, stakeholder engagement, timeliness, sustainability-related risks and opportunities, and others, were also added to provide a more complete picture of companies’ overall performances.   Prof Lawrence Loh, Director at the NUS Business School’s Centre for Governance and Sustainability, presented the key takeaways of the research. #NoBurnWednesday GAIA Asia Pacific members, the Consumer_Penang CAP and Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) are leading a critical call to action against Malaysia’s plan to construct 18 waste-to-energy (WtE) incinerators. While these incinerators are being touted as a solution to the country’s waste management challenges, the reality is far more concerning. WtE incineration not only poses significant environmental and health risks but also undermines Malaysia’s progress toward a sustainable and resilient future. Incineration is more than just a waste disposal method—it represents a missed opportunity to invest in genuinely sustainable waste management practices. The harmful pollutants released by WtE incinerators contribute to climate change, while the process itself hinders the development of a circular economy. Moreover, WtE is an incredibly costly and inefficient method of energy generation, with long-term consequences for our communities and the environment. CAP and SAM are rightfully advocating for a transition to Zero Waste—a comprehensive approach that emphasizes waste reduction, recycling, composting, and resource conservation. This strategy not only aligns with principles of sustainable development but also supports environmental justice by prioritizing the health and well-being of communities. We urge the Malaysian government to cancel these hazardous incineration projects and instead champion Zero Waste solutions that safeguard our environment, create sustainable jobs, and secure a healthier future for all Malaysians. MALAYSIA LAUNCHED NATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING FRAMEWORK (NSRF) The NSRF incorporates the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards developed by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). These standards include the IFRS S1: General Requirements for Disclosure of Sustainability-related Financial Information and the IFRS S2: Climate-related Disclosures (collectively referred to as the ISSB Standards). The primary objective of the NSRF is to ensure that corporate Malaysia delivers consistent, comparable, and reliable sustainability information, thereby enhancing the nation's competitiveness and appeal to investors. With the launch of the NSRF, Malaysia joins more than 20 jurisdictions around the world, representing a collective global gross domestic product (GDP) of 55%, which have adopted or are moving towards implementing IFRS S1 and S2 standards. The NSRF will adopt a phased and developmental approach, promoting widespread adoption and continuous improvement in the quality of disclosures. The adoption of IFRS S1 and S2 will be implemented simultaneously starting in 2025, initially affecting Main Market listed issuers with a market capitalization of RM2 billion or more. Establishing protected areas is just the first step – managing them effectively is the key to long-term conservation success.   Creating new protected areas is essential for biodiversity conservation, but success hinges on sustainable funding and effective management. A recent study reveals that many protected areas in Southeast Asia are struggling and ineffective in preventing deforestation, leading to biodiversity loss and carbon emissions. This is primarily due to insufficient resources and staffing.   "Once you set up a protected area, that’s when the money pot shrinks," notes our sustainable finance expert, Gopalasamy Reuben Clements. What is a carbon credit? A carbon credit is a permit that allows an organization to emit one ton of carbon dioxide. Carbon credits are also applied for other GHGs after they are converted to tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, using Global Warming Potentials (GWP. Carbon credits seem bad at first because they give firms certain rights to pollute the environment, but this is a market mechanism that helps effectively regulate firms’ GHG emissions. First, firms are allocated a certain number of carbon credits. Second, firms will trade these credits on the regulated markets. Specifically, if firms consume more than the number of allocated credits, they have to buy credits from the firms that still have extra credits. If firms only focus on buying offset credits, carbon credit demand will go up, given that their supplies are fixed. Bursa Carbon Exchange (BCX) has successfully concluded its auction on the first Malaysia Nature-based Carbon Credits Plus (MNC+) Contracts from the Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project which was cleared at RM50 per Contract, establishing a benchmark price for voluntary carbon credits for Malaysian nature-based carbon projects. This milestone has a national significance in showcasing Malaysia’s capacity to develop its own carbon projects complying to international standards, to be admitted onto BCX. Bursa Malaysia also states it's timely for Malaysia to consider implementing a compliance carbon market to accelerate domestic carbon projects development.
