What is happening to our quality customer experience ? We all from time to time like to indulge in some premium experiences. My wife decided to treat me to watch a movie at GV Gold Class ! Gold Class at Golden Village (GV) cinemas is a premium movie-going experience offered by the cinema chain in Singapore. Here are some key features and details about the Gold Class experience, I will just focus on 2: 1. Luxurious Seating: Gold Class cinemas feature plush, reclining seats with ample legroom and comfort. Each seat often includes a blanket and pillow for added comfort and when you are lucky you get the popcorns from the previous session including the container! Nice touch. 2. Personalized Service: Attentive staff provides in-seat service, including taking food and beverage orders before and during the movie. When you enter the GC lounge you get no greeting no acknowledgement of being welcomed, you barely walked into a room.... So for all the above you get charged premium prices ( S$93.00) for two with absolutely no service and no signs of premium experience ! Let me guess why is that so ...... "we are short of staff " but we charge you premium because we claim we are ! However the person who was seated at the entrance of the lounge checking the tickets was real but definitely didn't understand then a warm welcome is more important then checking the tickets! #service #Qualitymanagement

They have MAJOR entitlement problem. Not the customers...but the established ice cream brands in Singapore, I and my mom walked into a popular ice cream spot that rhymes with 'eyes', when I asked for a sample, got a stern no. On another weekend, went to other popular spot, Again, the same story. Got a NO. Like bros, how are you even running an ice cream shop? Upon digging through their reviews, found consistent glitches. 🍍 No free samples. 🍍 No welcome greetings or suggestions. 🍍 For not even a natural ice cream!!! Yet they call themselves premium. The best experience at those shop is just indifference. Not warmth. Our fight is not just against the pre-mix laden junk sold as ice creams but also degradation in basic consumer service. We are building a culture centered around kindness. So, even on crazy busy queues days, we don't frown at you. And yes, we have unlimited samples. Year 2020 was the darkest time of my life... The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted countless businesses overnight. For me, it was one of the hardest periods, but my business had actually started facing challenges much earlier. My first major setback hit in 2016 with Demonetization. Then came GST in 2017, impacting operations even further. Finally, in 2020, the pandemic forced my business to close entirely. It was a heavy loss, both financially and emotionally. During this time, my father stepped in and supported me, guiding me with invaluable business lessons he’d learned through his own challenges. With his advice, I took 2 full years to dive deep, studying different business models, financial markets, and investments to build the foundation I needed to start again. In 2023, I decided to give entrepreneurship another shot, putting those lessons and new knowledge into action. 🎯 Today, I can proudly say that: - I manage a team of 50+ across three businesses. - I’ve consulted many individuals on building their wealth. - I’ve fully recovered all my losses from those challenging years. - I started creating content and helped others on their financial journey. ”Golden transformation" is what the Chinese words behind me describe (金丹換骨). This was a conpliment note presented to our founder Dr Watson in 1878 from a province mayor for his excellent care to patients. After 146 years, this describes well today’s retail industry which has undergone a "golden transformation" in recent years, where a greater focus on health and wellness has led to significant changes in consumer behavior and product offerings. As people have become more conscious of their well-being, retailers have responded by providing a wider array of health-focused goods and services. And at AS Watson we have over 6,000 health professionals in our global footprint, offering services both offline and online. The event, held at Au Balcon at The Garage Botanic Gardens, exceeded my expectations in many ways. We enjoyed great food, made unexpected introductions, and listened to Yadah Wang shared insights on the highs and lows as an entrepreneur running I Love Tamei 16+ outlets with his spouse. His brief sharing on an upcoming AI-driven, human-centred F&B venture is also something that I look forward to see in near future. One key takeaway: 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠. I had interesting chats with fellow entrepreneurs, including Mavis Chen from Craveva whose slogan—“𝐴𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑎 ℎ𝑢𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑟-𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑖𝑛𝑛𝑜𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛”—resonated with Yadah’s vision. The networking also sparked scaling ideas for Uli's Kitchen, from supplying to halal-certified restaurants to converting to frozen kuih and to partnering with boutique coffee cafes. While we aren’t ready for some of these opportunities yet, this event confirmed the demand for scaling Malay kuih. Now it’s about aligning the right platform and partners with our vision. A dinner invitation hosted by ex-tenant got the present Sunway Pyramid & Sunway Malls management and the ex-COO together again. A cohesive team must remain tight and the camaraderie continues even way into retirement. Cohesive teamwork is one of the key success factors to successful execution of plans and strategies, and sustainability of growth and profit. Allow continuity of vision and it can become reality in shorter time. When people come and go, disruptions will impede smooth continuity and flow. Little Napoleons, if not well managed, can be major disruptors. Millennial do give the company a chance and stay long to see vision turned into reality. Sit tight, move tight, execute tight as a cohesive team.

Business is growing but my bank account is not. 😅 More business means more profit right? Not necessarily so. After the media feature on Straits Times that put my business in the spotlight, everything changed for SG Homemade. Sales increased, customers started coming in more steadily with word of mouth, and I was juggling more orders than ever before. Sounds good? 😁 In fact, my modest setup was quickly overwhelmed. To keep up, I invested in more equipment and hired additional staff. At first, this seemed like the right move. As the demand kept rising, the cycle of reinvesting profits just never seemed to end. Each time I expanded, it felt like I was only keeping up, never really getting ahead. On top of that, being caught up in the daily grind meant I rarely had time to step back and think about the future. I was stuck in the production, unable to see the bigger picture or plan long-term. ☀ Realising I needed a new approach, I made a strategic decision: I’d keep handling the manual work for now but work on boosting demand even further. The plan was to reach a point where it made sense to produce on a larger scale. This way, I could finally take a step back from the daily grind and focus on growing the business. Guess what? The shift paid off. I managed to free up time and resources, allowing me to focus on strategic growth and better manage profitability. I was also able to work on myself in many aspects, including having time to write this post. With some hits and misses, getting lost along the way, and accumulating my resources, the whole process took me an arduous 4 years. Here's me and the ladies who held the ford for me at that time. Forever grateful. ❤️

A Wake-Up Call The rail system in Singapore, what is commonly known as the Mass Rapid Transit System or the MRT, has been a reliable transportation system. There are the occasional blips, but often these are rectified rather quickly. I have no complaints. I am just happy to hop on the MRT, as it allows me to space out, think about issues, read LinkedIn posts, etc., on my way to work. It is a daily routine that is largely based on my muscle memory. I got to know that the MRT was down in the late afternoon of last Wednesday. I did not pay much attention to it, as I assumed that the track fault would be rectified soon. Come Thursday morning, when I was still in a blur mode, I was informed that there was no MRT service to my destination. The fault was not rectified despite the engineers working throughout the night to salvage the situation. Wow! My first reaction was "Oh no". This had never happened to me. What was I supposed to do? I had to think on my feet quickly. Off I went to take a bus after assessing multiple options. This was followed by hopping on 3 connecting MRT lines before finally reaching my destination. What was normally a 35-minute ride ended up being a 1 plus hour travel. Thank goodness, I was not late, but it was considered "late" as compared to my usual routine. Words such as backup plan, business continuity, disaster recovery, succession planning, etc. all came to mind automatically. These are "the things" that I will look out for during the course of my audits, because systems and even people will breakdown. Common observations/feedback (non-exhaustive) that I have encountered before:  • People assume (a very bad word) that things will not happen to them. One cannot be that lucky right! • Such events have never happened before. So, they are unlikely to come true! • The risk of failure is very low. We can manage for sure when things happen. Relax, chill! But things DO happen, and this unexpected MRT breakdown is a classic example.  It caught me by surprise, and I fully experienced the inconvenience that come with this extended breakdown over the last couple of days. Time to do my MIDLIFE APPRAISAL! since I am 40 years old today! I started as a waiter in Delifrance 24 years ago fast forward till today heading 5 functions across Malaysia Singapore, responsible for more than 30 capable professionals in a multinational cooperation. Spend 60% of my 40 years working! Started working at a younger age compared to my peers. Life mentored me, trained me and made me who I am. Along the way I’ve picked up some quotes by different wise people, hereby sharing some with you. 1. You can only connect the dots backwards. “Anything that trigger your interest, learn it! Somehow later in life that skill set/knowledge comes in handy. 2. Find your core believe! It will act as your light house to all your decision making. Leading to lesser regrets in life. 3. Be true and sincere, you might get hurt by some but you will also meet friends for life 4. People judge us by your actions while we judge ourselves by our intention. Be open to others feedback and internalize 5. “Be yourself”, only when it is not affecting others negatively. 6. It takes two years to learn to speak and sixty to learn to keep quiet. 7. When people tell you money can’t buy happiness, they are shopping in the wrong place! For those yet to reach 40, it’s not that scary as the thought. It was seven ago, 2017, I made a strategic shift from customer service to customer care during my heydays in Sunway Pyramid. It was commonly called, information counter. It was also problematic with high turnover of staff. It should be more than just a counter when malls were moving towards conjuring experiential lifestyle. It deserved more. It was renamed, concierge , with highly trained staff in customer care. Mall ambassadors and a new division of customer experience, CX, was born. When MAS did a voluntarily separation of six thousand staff, I took on some of their trained air stewardesses they let off. It cut the learning curve and immediately elevated customer service level to heart-touching customer care. You know your customers are well cared for and in good hands with staff well trained to evacuate a plane within seconds. Are you still in customer service mode? If so, change.

The Escalator Few days ago, as I was with my son in Sunway Pyramid, as "usual", I was walking up one of the escalators. My son said, "mummy, the escalator will bring us up. You don't need to walk." I paused and looked at him... it reminded me when I was working in Singapore years ago before I got married, I was with a colleague. As "usual", I was walking up the escalator. He said, "Hey, escalator will bring us up. Don't defeat the purpose of the escalator." But I still did, and still do, today. At times, I stood there and waited to be brought up. At times, I stood there and waited to be brought up, because too many people. At times, when I was rushing, despite many people standing on the escalator, I would say, "excuse me" and I walked up. (this is Malaysia, we probably don't have the culture of standing on one side so others can walk if they want to). I related escalator in our lives. Escalate, in Collins dictionary, means to increase or be increased in extent, intensity, or magnitude. As we walk our journey, especially when we are driving a business, thriving for survival, we need to accelerate. At times, we need the escalator to help us to move faster. One person we can only do so much, but when we have the escalator, we can move faster. At times, we can just go with the flow (thus standing on the escalator). Whatever state we are, the escalator does help us to go further in speed and time. No, when walking on the escalator, I do not defeat the purpose of escalator. And I do not want to be the person who stop others from moving (so I would not stand blocking another person (unless the escalator is the super narrow type). Want to try walking on the escalator? It helps you to gain extra steps too and probably loose a few calories too. Haha. I love the escalator!
