The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) recently held a Minister dialogue session with the industry stakeholders on the imminent Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA). The EECA has been approved by parliament on 25th Jun 2024 and is now in the final stages to be officially gazetted. This is a crucial step for the country to achieve our commitment of reducing GHG emissions intensity by 45% by 2030 and achieve net zero carbon by 2050. Under the EECA, buildings will be required to display Building Energy Label showing their Building Energy Intensity (BEI) renewed annually. There will also be a minimum target BEI to be met according to building typology. Many industry key players consider the EECA to be a long overdue initiative but its better late than never as: One watt saved (EE) is always more than one watt generated (RE).

The influx of data centre investments in Malaysia should trigger the Government to seriously relook at our power and water supplies. KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Corporation Bhd (BCorp) signed memorandums of strategic cooperation with Skyworth Group Co Ltd, a Chinese company specialising in smart home appliances and technology, and Skywell New Energy Automobile Group Co Ltd, a Chinese manufacturer of new energy vehicles (NEV). The memorandums mark the initiation of two alliances aimed at exploring innovation and expansion across vital sectors in Malaysia and the broader Asean region. The collaboration pairs BCorp with Skyworth to advance smart technologies in Malaysia. It will focus on advancing smart home technology, systems and new energy solutions. Leveraging each other’s strengths, BCorp is poised to explore using its extensive distribution network to enhance the reach of Skyworth’s innovative smart home appliances and systems across Malaysia, introducing consumers to cutting-edge advancements. The strategic cooperation will also include developing and implementing green energy solutions, such as residential, commercial and industrial photovoltaic systems, aligning with BCorp’s sustainability goals and contributing to an eco-friendlier future for Malaysia. In the second collaboration, Berjaya Eco-Drive Sdn Bhd (Berjaya ED), a subsidiary of BCorp, will collaborate with Skywell to establish the Chinese company as a prominent NEV brand in Malaysia and Asean, catalysing NEV growth across the region. The endeavour may include exploring strategic partnership to advance essential NEV technologies and bolster the NEV ecosystem in the country, thus enhancing the entire NEV landscape in Malaysia.

Sarawak has plans to generate 10 GW of green power by 2030. Such green power would be ideal for the massive power needs of AI data centres. Here's what Sarawak Energy has to say: "Initial studies indicated Sarawak had 20,000MW of hydropower potential over 52 sites, of which 3,452MW has already been harnessed through the three aforementioned hydropower plants. If fully developed, the associated reservoirs would occupy less than 2% of Sarawak’s landmass while offering many new economic opportunities including lakeside tourism and rural development. JUST TAKE A LOOK AT INTEL’s UNWAVERING CONFIDENCE IN PENANG. This is what RM32 billion (US$7 billion) new investment looks like being constructed.  This is Project Pelican.  It will be Intel’s largest advanced packaging facility in the world with 710,000-square-foot clean room occupying two levels of manufacturing space (and more) [pix]. Intel is also building their fifth Penang assembly test manufacturing facility in nearby Kulim High Tech Park. That is Project Falcon, where the next generation of Intel processors, Meteor Lake (also known as Intel Core Ultra), designed using Intel’s proprietary Foveros 3D advanced packaging technology will be tested and assembled. When completed, there will be a total of 16 buildings for Intel in Penang, covering a total of 16 million sq ft, of which 2+ million will be for manufacturing. This is part of Intel’s IDM 2.0 plan, to be a fully Integrated Device Manufacturer for the most advanced processors in the world. Wow! The privilege of Penang! Intel opened their first factory here 1972, with a group of companies which is now known as the ‘Eight Samurai’ to establish Penang as the first high-tech hub in Asia. Named ‘A1’, the cost was a mere US$1.6 million [pix].  As the first factory outside the US it had only 100 employees.  This was less than 4 years after Intel was incorporated at what was then Silicon Valley in California. 52 years later, Intel in Penang has some 15,000 employees - and will be adding another 4,000+ when these new facilities come online.  They will have no problems finding the best talent.  Others will, in keeping theirs. Today, Penang is renowned as ‘Silicon Valley of the East’ and ships almost 15% of the world’s export of chips. The original ‘Eight Samurai’ are still here, albeit some have transformed with new names:  Intel Corporation, Robert Bosch, Clarion, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Hew­lett-Packard (now Keysight Technologies, Agilent Technologies and Avago Technologies/Broadcom), Litronix (now ams OSRAM ), Hitachi (now Renesas Electronics) and National Semiconductor.  Penang has emerged as a powerhouse in the tech industry boasting a thriving ecosystem brimming with exciting opportunities for tech. They are joined by 450 other multinational companies here supported by over 6,000 local firms making up a formidable ecosystem of supply chain not only for semicon but also medtech, and many other high tech industries. New entrants are coming in with advanced tech.  Who wants to open a new multi-million one with out-of-date tech? There is also a diverse landscape for start-ups and those seeking to advance their careers. The nation is responding. The next generation of talent is being spurred to tech. Sarawak – New ASEAN Economic & Energy Power House Met with the Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Abang Haji Openg, and other prominent Sarawakian leaders. After introducing myself and mentioning that we last met at the Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching last year for the Keluarga Malaysia roadtour, surprisingly he still remembered. Sarawak is aggressively exploring the potential of exporting hydropower and attracting energy-intensive investments. Sarawak has plans to generate 10GW of green power by 2030. Sarawak had 20,000MW of hydropower potential over 52 sites, of which 3,452MW has already been harnessed through the three hydropower plants.
