Today is my last day at Karat. It’s 5 am in Mexico, and I can’t sleep. 😪 Back in 2013, and for the next 10 years, I worked as a Technical Recruiter, partnering with some of the top companies in Silicon Valley and hiring the best engineers through Google-style interview processes. To hire the best of the best, I remember we would conduct around 100 interviews just to hire one person. The interview process was incredibly unfair because some candidates would get really tough interviewers. Even great candidates who simply had a bad day or faced a tough interviewer wouldn't pass the interviews and ultimately wouldn't get hired at the company I was working for. However, these same candidates would go on to land jobs at other top-tier companies like Google and Facebook. But because of a flawed interview process, we would lose out on excellent candidates. On the other hand, there were some candidates who had an easier interviewer, and even though they weren't the strongest engineers, they would pass the interviews and get hired. A friend of mine went through several interview processes at different companies but kept getting rejected because he didn’t have deep knowledge of certain specific technical concepts. However, he's one of the best engineers I know. Despite being turned down by so many companies, he's now working at Tesla as principal engineer, proving that traditional interview processes don’t always recognize true talent. His story is a great example of how flawed interview processes can sometimes overlook incredible candidates.
