Since today is #EarthDay, I wanted to highlight the push for sustainability in supply chain. In an interview with David Correll of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, their Supply Chain Sustainability report points out that investor pressure is both key and a driver in the push for sustainability (https://lnkd.in/gJBj2uyX). My takeaways as to why and the challenges in building a sustainable supply chain. 1. It's no question consumers are more conscious about the effects companies and brands have on the environment and people. Building sustainability practices and ensuring a sustainable supply chain builds brand loyalty but also can protect the brand from unknown disruptions. 2. Measuring and data is a big challenge. I believe a couple things stem from this. First, we have traditional supply chain players who may not have the data because information were not collected, or suppliers and vendors don't offer up the data. Second, I would also add that sometimes metrics aren't well defined. I would argue sometimes there are vanity metrics on sustainability. I think to make measurement and metrics meaningful is not just the top-line number on what environmental harm you've reduced but what type of impact it has had. Who's lives have you changed and made for the better. 3. Even after the pandemic, companies are still committed to sustainability measures. All the disruption in the past few years have lead people to evaluate and rethink supply chain and that presents an opportunity to pursue or add sustainability as they build their new system. However, given the state of the economy with inflation and ever constant concerns of a recession, spending and investment has been lowered across the board affect sustainability measures. I think sustainability is a necessary future for supply chain because even just the pandemic has taught many of us, we can't keep operating in the old system. Building a sustainable supply chain means building a resilient one and they are not mutually exclusive. #Mexico has been a crucial player in the North American #supplychain for several decades, adapting to different roles with each era. From being a raw materials provider pre-NAFTA, to NAFTA-era manufacturing, and post-NAFTA as well. The country now excels in #nearshoring, simplifying and shortening the supply chain. Today, Mexico's #manufacturing base caters to all industrial groups across various levels of tech and production. #Resilience in supply chains necessitates collaboration, synchronization, and risk reduction. As a result, supply chain leaders are increasingly turning to Mexico for even closer #integration within their systems. My connections and colleagues are looking southward for increased supplier integration. Is your network doing the same?

In 2018, Burberry's annual report revealed that the company had burned 28.6 million pounds of clothing and cosmetics. The company faced a lot of backlash from environmentally conscious buyers. This wasteful practice is not unique to Burberry. Many luxury brands have opted for this practice to prevent unsold items from being sold at significant discounts, potentially impacting regular pricing. In response to backlash, Burberry announced its decision to cease the destruction of unsold merchandise. The company declared they were already taking steps to #reuse, repair, donate, or #recycle unsold products. This move showcases the growing awareness of the importance of circular practices and sustainable consumption.
