Best Artist Community: Wazee Union / Walnut Workshop
Westword Magazine
S. Brian Smith and Neil Adam wheel and deal real estate, but to them, a building isn't just a building. When they saw an empty warehouse and former factory wasting away down by the railroad tracks off of Brighton Boulevard, they envisioned creating something modern and bold, a community-builder with a concrete floor. And so Wazee Union was born. Inspired by such communal artist colonies as the Third Ward in Brooklyn, they sectioned off nearly fifty studio spaces of varying sizes and rented…
Inspired by such communal artist colonies as the Third Ward in Brooklyn, they sectioned off nearly fifty studio spaces of varying sizes and rented them, cheap, to artists, crafters, designers and creative small businesses. Not surprisingly, those spaces were snapped up like that and are now rarely empty for more than a couple of days. But artists don't just work here; they also show their work: The thriving community hosts juried gallery shows, Second Saturday open houses and other arts-oriented events. The project has been so successful that Walnut Workshop, a sister enclave, is now open right across the tracks, and Smith and Adam have plans for more retooled properties in the works.

Best Improvisational Workspace: The Desk
Westword Magazine
The new economy has many of us working for something other than traditional brick-and-mortar enterprises, but no matter how promising your latest start-up, you can't do it all out of your house — or worse, your car. The Desk has taken the idea of a co-workspace several steps further, offering everything from desks to isolation booths to conference rooms for inexpensive hourly rates, along with wine, beer, Ink! coffee and free fax, printing and wi-fi services. For those on the go, this is the…

Best New Arts Project: The Laundry on Lawrence
Westword Magazine
Brian Smith and the Space Creators are on a roll. They took a chance in 2010, when they opened the doors at Wazee Union, the first of their growing empire of warehouses transformed into artist communities with affordable studio space. When that gamble turned out to be even more successful than they could have imagined, they moved forward with Walnut Workshop, another project right across the tracks from Wazee Union. And this past year the third cog in their growing empire, the Laundry on…

And this past year the third cog in their growing empire, the Laundry on Lawrence, didn't just open its doors; it also introduced an expanded concept. In addition to continuing the cheap, dorm-like studio/office model featured in the first two locations, the Laundry also includes a dedicated gallery space; a performance venue called Work | Space that's already home to the LIDA Project and Control Group Productions; and even an inexpensive photography studio, Bleach, which can be rented by the day. Smith and his Space Creators can also be commended for upping their commitment to the RiNo neighborhood by sponsoring a monthly Makers & Doers networking meet-up and participating in the RiNo Yacht Club neighborhood beautification organization. It all adds up to an impressive example of how the business and art worlds can collaborate to make our city a better place. And, hey, guys, there are plenty of other empty warehouses in this town just waiting for a new coat of paint!

GenXYZ: Colorado’s 25 Most Influential Young Professionals
Colorado Biz Magazine
From cobizmag.com:
Now in its third year, the feature we’ve dubbed "Gen XYZ" for the age-group or "generation" it represents – the under-40 set – has boomed in popularity and participation numbers, to the simultaneous delight and consternation of the judges who pour over the nominations to come to a consensus on the year’s top 25 young professionals, and then from that group select a top five who are profiled in more detail.

This year, a record 261 nominations were submitted online at www.cobizmag.com. The judges were made up of ColoradoBiz magazine’s editorial board along with representatives of Denver’s Young Professionals group and Regis University.
The judging criteria: professional achievement, impact in the community, obstacles surmounted, and the drive exhibited by the nominee in his or her career. It’s obvious there is much subjectivity involved, and there was ample discussion among the judges as to how exactly a "most influential young professional" should be defined and how certain attributes should be weighted.
