Mexico remains a prime destination for foreign direct investment (FDI), according to the latest data from the Ministry of Economy. In the first five months of 2024, 127 public investment announcements from the private sector were identified, totaling an expected investment of $39.157 billion. This amount represents an increase of $3 billion since the announcements made in mid-April, with expectations that these investments will enter the country over the next two to three years, thereby boosting economic growth and job creation. The Ministry of Economy noted that these investments signal a strong vote of confidence in Mexico's potential, projecting the creation of 54,347 new direct jobs across various industries. Investment distribution has also diversified geographically. Querétaro and the State of Mexico lead the way, capturing 28 percent of the total, or $7.128 billion. Notable public investment announcements between May 15 and 31, 2024, include Evergo from the Dominican Republic with a $200 million investment in the energy sector, LT Precision from the United States with a $143 million investment in the steel industry, and Japan's Daikin with a $122 million investment in air conditioner manufacturing. Luis Torres, senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, stated in an analysis that while Bank of Mexico research indicates that the reshoring process has been slowly progressing in regions that traditionally receive higher foreign direct investment (FDI) flows since 2020, the anticipated increase in FDI related to nearshoring has not yet materialized. He observed that much of the marginal increase in manufacturing investment is due to companies reinvesting profits in their existing facilities. Manufacturing firms are primarily expanding their current capacities, according to contacts at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. This includes adding production lines, purchasing new equipment, and hiring more employees. Although companies quickly announce new projects, it remains uncertain how many of these will be scaled back, delayed, or canceled in the future, Torres noted in his analysis.

What Jumps Out : An Interesting Week Events began with the fiasco at Hard Rock International Stadium in Miami, journeyed on to Tropic Ocean Airways in the Bahamas, followed by PROCOLOMBIA and avianca, and then back to the relative solace of Medellin - and that was only Tuesday evening ! The Pension Reform is now law, so it's time to get on with it. There have been months of scaremongering and now there will be teething pains but then in 12 months it will be fully forgotten. As an affiliate, trust me the AFPs are substandard in general, they lack flexibility and investment expertise - and recently when I tried to withdraw some funds, it was like a scene from a family funeral. Is the reform ideal ? No. Did the dysfunctioning AFPs need a wake up call ? Absolutely, but there again who doesn't in the financial sector. The latest version of the Asobolsa - the annual week away from the family to drink cocktails in Cartagena - has been announced by bvc-Bolsa de Valores de Colombia S.A. or nuam exchange, I get confused. Fortunately, there will be some Chile & Peruvian participation but no douby boys-club members Autorregulador del Mercado de Valores de Colombia - AMV & Superfinanciera Colombia will also be given free flights and hotels to sit on a panel despite their obstructive behavior. ASOBOLSA hasn't been fit for purpose in a long time - ask yourself this question. What has changed since August 2023 ? Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística - DANE Colombia reported May Retail Sales (-1.7%) & Manufacturing Production (-3.6%) in negative territory once again however the deterioration was lower than 12 months ago and the monthly service sector reported nominal growth in 16 of 18 sectors. FENALCO provided a little vehicle sales update and prognosis for the sector. Whilst there was a 6% decline (to 85,000) through June 30 they are expecting a pick up in 2H2024 to arrive at a total of over 180,000. That said - it would be lowest since 2020. Switching to housing 1H sales they too are well down to 66,620 - an 8.8% decline - that is the lowest since 2012 according to Camacol Colombia data. What do these two sectors have in common ? A deep reliance on the Banco de la República - Colombia who continue to suffocate both markets and without batting an eyelid. I saw a report (they will remain nameless for now) trying to push the housing issues on the Government as they aren't providing enough subsidies towards home purchases. Excuse my vernacular but how in hell and why is a Government who is trying to cut spending, to run the kind of tight ship that overseas entities want to see, supposed to find extra money to prop up the housing sector ? Let's also not forget Gustavo Petro hasn't been in power since 2012 ! Finally, the politicians are back tomorrow (yes Saturday) to start their new session - hoorah, said nobody. That said the current bickering and media fencing is so intense perhaps we won't notice their back. Take care Roops
