The design of Academia Atlas is based on a consistent modular system that provides the flexibility to transform or grow interior spaces as the club’s needs evolve. This approach ensures long-term usability while maintaining a cohesive architectural identity. The structure is defined by open-air voids where elemental column and beam structures meet to frame the building, creating a grid-like effect. A reticulated roof, which acts as a brise-soleil, enhances comfort in densely built areas by mitigating solar exposure. Within the 8,300-square-meter rectangular volume, the building integrates outdoor spaces that provide shaded routes through the complex. These read like street passages, intimate courtyards, and small-town garden squares. Exterior staircases punctuate these spaces, creating a strong relationship and fostering a sense of fluidity between the interior and exterior environments. How can architecture foster a sense of community among administrators and players? “Instead of designing two isolated buildings, we sought to create an architectural system that integrates all the components of the institution, unified by a central garden that acts as the project’s main organizing axis. This design allows the institution to operate horizontally, breaking down hierarchies and promoting the interaction of players from all divisions, administrators and collaborators in a dynamic environment where each team member feels part of a community,” explains Fernando Sordo Madaleno. On the other hand, while its layout may seem rigid, experiencing the project reveals an environment where the boundaries between inside and outside are constantly dissolving. #SordoMadaleno

From the earliest stages, Academia Atlas FC aimed to design and build the project within 18 months. This requirement led to a thorough analysis and adoption of local building systems, taking advantage of the inherent qualities of the available materials. The structure uses a simple construction system of concrete columns and beams, complemented by partition walls. The pigmented concrete structure was cast on site, while the precast concrete floor slabs were pre-cast for rapid assembly on site, design solutions that not only significantly reduced waste but also promoted sustainable construction. The monochromatic red color plays a central role in the architectural narrative, reflecting the identity of the soccer team while drawing inspiration from traditional Mexican brick. In addition, the red bricks were designed specifically for the building in terms of proportions, dimensions, color, and structural functions of the building, enhancing the visual and structural coherence of the project. #SordoMadaleno #WIP #sketch #architecture #arquitectura

Academia Atlas, the new home of Atlas FC - one of Mexico’s most long-lived soccer teams - centers its design around six soccer pitches that define the campus layout, turning a design constraint into an opportunity to develop a flexible architectural system with open public spaces that respond to user needs while promoting community interaction and connection. The concept aims to create a tension between the architectural program and the site by integrating the landscape into the project. Academia Atlas FC has won the Commercial-Sports & Entertainment category at The Architect's Newspaper's AN's The Best of Design Awards. In addition, the project has been shortlisted for Project of the Year Award, an honor selected by the jury from among all the winners of the Best of Design program. Meanwhile, The Village, located in Quintana Roo, Mexico, received an Honorable Mention in the Residential Multi-Family category. This year marks the 12th edition of the program, which for the first time welcomed submissions from studios and projects around the world. We are grateful to the international panel of judges, who rigorously evaluated entries based on unique approaches, respect for the land, project footprint, bold vision, and community impact.
