About us

The Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit is the national central agency in Malta that is responsible for the collection, collation, processing, analysis and dissemination of information with a view to combating money laundering and the funding of terrorism. The Unit became operational on the 1st October 2002 when it was established by virtue of Legal Notice 297 of 2002, which brought into force the comprehensive amendments to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act that were enacted by means of Act XXXI of 2001. Though set up as an agency within the Ministry responsible for finance, the Unit has separate judicial personality and operates autonomously from its own offices with its own staff. • As the 68th MONEYVAL (Council of Europe) Plenary comes to an end, we are pleased to see the FIAU’s role evolve within this forum and the MONEYVAL community. Our Director, Alfred Zammit, who led the Maltese delegation, made valuable interventions that enriched the discussions throughout the week. Moreover, two significant milestones of the plenary were the adoption of the Mutual Evaluation Reports for: 📌Guernsey, where our Head of Legal Affairs, Jonathan Phyall, served as a financial evaluator 📌 Bosnia and Herzegovina, where our Head of Data Management & Analytics, Christopher Vella, served as a financial evaluator Meanwhile, Alexander Mangion, FIAU’s Head of Strategy, Policy and Quality Assurance, will be concluding his secondment with the MONEYVAL Secretariat this December. Over the past two years, Dr Mangion has been instrumental in supporting two assessments and several other MONEYVAL projects. #MONEYVAL #FIAU #InternationalCoOperation
