Founders journey Episode 2 - New Directions Changing product and strategy directions based on feedback from our target group and users is a core element of all startups. At Vilosia, we're no exception. One crucial insight we gained was the importance of continuously learning from users and engaging with our target audience. This feedback led us to an exciting new product direction. Our initial 3D approach for building workflows was unique and created significant interest. Creating a 3D world of workflows is not only innovative but also fun and effective for NoCoders. However, feedback from consultants and IT service companies highlighted a core challenge: 50 to 80% of their projects involve software migration. This insight steered us towards a new opportunity. Understanding dependencies, database queries and API calls in legacy systems is often time-consuming and costly. This is where Vilosia steps in. We're making the starting point of software migration as seamless as possible. Transitioning our focus from greenfield projects to software migration allows us to address a pressing industry need. In the upcoming posts, we'll dive deeper into software migration, drawing from our experiences and those of our customers and network. I have been involved in startups since 2012 and am currently working on my revolutionary startup UchGuch. Among consultants, I often meet the opinion that a startup team needs to focus on one idea. But this is contrary to the skills of a startup team, if you meet a cool startup team, they can quickly come up with and validate ideas and this is their main task in the market, that's why they are looking for investments, to create a team that will develop a failed successful idea. But practically none of the available tools on the market allows a startup team to register or apply for all the ideas they have in the pipeline at once. Often startups themselves burn out as the graveyard of hypotheses grows. If a startup team cannot recognize in time that their hypothesis is not promising and honestly tell the investor about it, a lot of money will be spent and there will be a lot of frustration for everyone. Skills That AI Cannot Replace ​ Recently, during conversations with some investors, the topic of AI's impact on the investment world came up quite a lot. Many investors believe that AI, with its ability to evaluate growth potential and project prospects based on data models, will gradually disrupt or even replace certain investment evaluation processes that rely heavily on data analysis. ​ However, they often joke with me, saying, "Matt, don't worry, angel investing will never be replaced by AI because there’s no set formula for making these decisions. There's simply no way to train a model for it!" ​ This reminds me of what Einstein once said: "The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift." This quote perfectly captures the contrast between human intuition and AI's logical analysis—a contrast worth reflecting on. ​ While AI's analytical power may seem impressive, it essentially operates by "looking backward to connect the dots." In reality, many of the most crucial decisions are made without clear data, often amidst uncertainty. ​ As Steve Jobs once said, "You can't connect the dots looking forward." Moving into the future depends on "trusting that the dots will somehow connect in your future." It relies on a decision maker's intuition, honed through years of experience, and the courage to take risks. ​ Many successful startups are proof of this. For instance, one of our portfolio companies, Hims & Hers, rang the bell at the New York Stock Exchange in 2021 as a leading telehealth company. If you didn't know their backstory, you might find it hard to believe that in 2017, Hims began with just one product: hair loss treatment. ​ Over the next five years, Andrew's knack for sensing market signals opened up incredible growth opportunities for the company—including expansion into women's health, developing nutritional and sexual wellness products, and seizing the massive opportunity brought by regulatory changes to pivot into telehealth. ​ These signals are not always obvious or easy to track. Recognizing them requires a combination of intuition, decisiveness, and faith—qualities that help leaders find direction in uncertainty. Such decisions, which cannot be quantified, are beyond the capabilities of AI. ​ No matter how much technology advances, the wisdom, creativity, and ability to connect deeply with others that we gain from our experiences will remain irreplaceable. It’s precisely these human qualities that allow us to innovate and find new opportunities amid change continuously. Perhaps we can leave the analysis of the past to AI, but the future is something we will always have the power to shape ourselves!

Journey and experience when joining Founder Institute: Joining Founder Institute (FI) is a challenging but also very worthwhile experience for anyone with entrepreneurial aspirations. FI is not just a training program, but also a journey of self-discovery, learning from other founders and facing real-life challenges in building a business. Starting with determination The decision to join Founder Institute was a major turning point in my entrepreneurial journey. FI is not an easy program, from the very first days, the program set many strict requirements, forcing me to adjust and optimize my ability to manage time and resources. The first step in this journey is a commitment to myself: I am ready to face bigger challenges and learn from failures. Practical training program Founder Institute is different from many other startup programs in that everything is practical and immediately applicable to work. The lectures are not only theoretical but also incorporate many practical examples from successful advisors and founders. One of the biggest values ​​I received from FI is the coaching from advisors who have been through all the stages of the startup process. Every week, we are asked to complete large assignments, from identifying target customers, building a prototype product to how to raise capital from investors. The advisors are not afraid to give strict but accurate feedback, helping me realize many weaknesses that need to be improved in my strategy and product Challenges and major lessons One of the biggest challenges when joining FI is the workload and time pressure. However, this has trained me to manage work more effectively, know how to prioritize important tasks and be more decisive in strategic decisions. FI also taught me that failure is an inevitable part of the startup journey. It is important to know how to stand up, learn from mistakes and improve continuously. The lessons of flexibility, patience and how to deal with failure are extremely valuable experiences that I have received. Joining Founder Institute has been a challenging but also very rewarding journey. FI has helped me develop myself strongly, build a solid foundation for my startup and learn from those who have gone before. Fundraising is a very difficult task for startup founders. Unfortunately, it can be one of the most important tasks for your startup to be successful. However, in a lot of cases there is a minimum amount of capital required to get through an R&D phase towards commercialization. If you can’t raise that minimum amount, it may not be worth starting the company. This is fairly a common issue with startups with high technical risk and startups in secondary markets like Atlanta (where I have observed this a lot, I’m sure other secondary markets have a similar issue). Someone described to me a saying that applies to this construct, “making great ideas good”. Let me explain a scenario where, you probably shouldn’t bother starting. A founder has a great idea for a fully autonomous robotic road paver. They study the market and it is massive. They need $5m to get a working prototype, and another $50m to have full commercialization and an initial production run. They pitch a bunch of angels and VCs. They get interest from a local VC that asks “what can you do with $1m?” The founder now has a choice to make. Go back and build a business where $1m could work (great idea to mediocre idea) or keep fundraising. The right answer is to say no thank you. This is where if you are in a secondary market, you will conclude that you either move to SV or give up. IE, it’s enough money for a cupcake but not enough for a full cake, so you would end up with a half baked cake. The issue with taking the $1m is that now you are committed. An investor that operates this way doesn’t have the right mindset and their network is likely to be of investors with their mindset. So while you raised money, you will struggle to raise more. You won’t make enough meaningful progress to demonstrate capability to warrant a new investor being excited. It’s also likely that you raised the $1m at a lower valuation and you can’t justify a much larger valuation to raise $50m. So you are in “no man’s land”. Unfortunately this investor with the wrong mindset may say absurd things like, “go get some revenue”. Venture Capital is a high risk - high reward business. This type of business aligns well with VC principles. It is very difficult to course correct from this point. I have personally made this mistake. It’s tough because as a founder, you are impatient and want to get into your startup full-time. Picking your first VC investor can be the biggest decision you make, and sometimes the decision is to turn down the wrong money and be patient for the right money. Btw. I am the “right” money for many founders, but am the wrong money for the majority of founders.

Great news for our team – AIN recognized WhiteBridge.ai as a startup of the day! :) I think it's a good opportunity to revisit the beginning and share more about our journey in developing the product. WhiteBridge was born out of the realization that data was the most valuable asset out there. On the technical side, we saw a gap in the market for efficiently consolidating and interpreting what we consider ‘dispersed’ digital identities. In simple words, every person has pieces of their identity across multiple platforms, like different social media channels, but we lack awareness of what they look like together. To close that gap, initially, we focused only on insights for sales. However, we quickly understood that our product had the potential to serve a broader range of needs. We then decided to test different approaches and conduct deeper interviews with potential customers, expanding the use cases. Funny enough, when we announced our online platform in December 2023, that was another way of testing our offer rather than a super formal launch.
