It’s disappointing news for the nation’s army of Wetherspoon fans, as the cheap and cheerful pub chain ditches a popular beer brand.
Fans of San Miguel have until the end of the month to order a pint of their favourite Spanish themed-beer — after that, it’ll be gone for good.
Instead, Spoons will be offering punters Poretti, which will cost less than £4 a pint at most locations.
Recent research shows that San Miguel is the nation’s favourite beer.
YouGov researchers asked the public what they thought about 164 well-known brands between July and September this year, and ranked the results as a percentage of people who had a positive opinion.
San Miguel came first with 61%, followed by Guinness at 53%. It was the ciders, Kopparberg, Strongbow and Thatchers Gold that came in joint third with 51%.
Wetherspoon are yet to reveal why the change has been made, but did confirm the news. Speaking to Metro, a Wetherspoons spokesperson said :’San Miguel will be available in pubs until the end of November.’
Drinkers have reacted to the news that their favourite beer will be disappearing from Wetherspoon with mixed feelings.
One Facebook commenter said they were ‘gutted it’s going’, while another was a little more blunting exclaiming they were ‘p*ssed off’ by the news.
A third shared how San Miguel is his ‘go to, especially in the summer’.
But other Wetherspoon fans weren’t quite so concerned.
‘No love lost there then, one of the nastiest lagers out there,’ said a very unbothered drinker. Another commenter added that there were ‘better Spanish lagers’ out there.
A huge new Wetherspoon is open at a London train station
If you’re one of the roughly 250,000 people who commute into London each day, you’ve probably noticed something very different at the train station, as the transport hub recently got a refreshing new addition.
As well as the numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants already on offer there, a brand new Wetherspoons pub is set to opened in September, meaning it’s now easier than ever to grab a cheeky post-work pint.
The Lion and the Unicorn, in The Sidings which was formerly home to Waterloo’s Eurostar terminus, welcomed punters from Tuesday September 3, after the popular pub chain invested a whopping £2.8million into its development.
Its name is inspired by the Festival of Britain which was held at the nearby South Bank in 1951 and showcased British achievements in the arts, architecture, science and technology.
