Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed that the stress of the first season caused him to lose several teeth.

After causing a sensation when it was released in 2021, the South Korean series is finally back.

Netflix’s season 2 trailer for Squid Game was released this week and the second season is set to return with a bang in December.

Reviews suggest that season 2 is just as disturbingly violent as the first, which only adds excitement for the upcoming season.

In an interview with the BBC, the director revealed that he lost several teeth because of stress during the first season.

‘It was eight or nine,’ he laughed when asked how many teeth he lost.

He added that his teeth are hurting following the latest season and commented: ‘I haven’t seen my dentist yet, but I’ll probably have to pull out a few more very soon.’

The director vowed not to return to the series due to the stress but admitted he returned to the role because of his financial situation.

‘Money,’ he told the BBC without hesitation when asked why he returned to the show.

‘Even though the first series was such a huge global success, honestly I didn’t make much,’ he confessed.’So doing the second series will help compensate me for the success of the first one too.’

‘And I didn’t fully finish the story,’ he added.

Hwang added that given the expectations following the first season, he is now even more anxious.

‘The stress I feel now is much greater,’ he commented.

Squid Game became the streaming service’s most-watched series ever and won several awards, including 3 Golden Globes and 14 Emmys.

It was estimated that the show generated $900 million (£706.6 million) in revenue for Netflix.

In the season trailer, Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) is seen returning to play again after winning the first game, as he tries and fails to convince the players to leave the game.

Netflix has also announced that the third and final season of the show will be released in 2025.

Squid Game season 2 will be released on December 26 on Netflix.
