Paul Scholes admits he was stunned when a PAOK player asked for the Manchester United legend’s autograph after their Europa League clash.
United beat Greek side PAOK 2-0 on Thursday night thanks to an Amad Diallo brace – their first win in Europe for over a year.
Scholes was on punditry duty for TNT Sports and was involved in a heartwarming moment after full-time when he was greeted by an opposition player.
Just as the former England international was about to go live, midfielder Magomed Ozdoev approached and asked him to sign his shirt.
Scholes obliged, though admitted he was surprised the Russian would want his signature, until Ozdoev revealed it was for his father Mustafa.
When TNT host Jules Breach suggested that he was a ‘man in demand’, Scholes, 49, replied: ‘He did [ask for an autograph] yeah!.
‘I wasn’t sure he remembered me, it was such a long time ago [when I played].
‘It was an autograph for his dad and I obliged. I think I spelt it right, as well!’
As for the match itself, it was a vital result for United who have moved up to 15th in the Europa League table but remain three points off the top-eight who automatically advance to the last-16.
It also means the Red Devils are unbeaten under Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has one game left as interim manager – against Leicester on Sunday – before the arrival of Ruben Amorim.
But Scholes is concerned that several United stars will be unable to adapt to the Sporting Lisbon boss’ style of play.
He said: ‘Does he want wingers who are going to run back? If he wants that, I’m not sure [Marcus] Rashford and [Alejandro] Garnacho are right for that.
‘Does he want two wing-backs in [Diogo] Dalot and [Noussair] Mazraoui who might be a little bit better defensively but not as good going forward?’
