Delays on trains at Moorgate
Great Northern passengers face delays to and from Moorgate station in central London.
Trains could be delayed by up to 30 minutes due to a signalling fault – one of many to hit the rail network today.
Services between Moorgate and Finsbury Park have to run at a reduced speed.
The disruption is expected to last until 9pm, National Rail said.
Northern line is part suspended
If you were hoping for a smooth journey this evening, the Tube has other plans as part of the Northern line is suspended.
There is no service between Finchley Central and Mill Hill East.
The stretch of Northern line between Camden Town and High Barnet has severe delays while engineers fix a faulty train at Mill Hill East.
TfL said the rest of the line has good service.
Delays near Birmingham Airport on the M42
While the emergency services were dealing with the crash further north on the M42, the motorway had problems near Birmingham Airport and the NEC.
One out of three lanes was closed northbound on the M42 between J6 (the NEC and Birmingham Airpor) and J7 (M6) due to works to repair a manhole.
Drivers were told their journeys could take 30 minutes longer than usual.
Crash on the M42 causes delays
Two cars have crashed on the M42 near Tamworth, West Midlands, this afternoon.
The incident was causing long delays on the motorway northbound between junctions J9 and J10.
Footage shows fire crews and highways officers on the scene of the crash involving two cars.
National Highways warned of up to 20-minute delays in the area.
It comes as wet weather and winds are sweeping across the UK, bringing sudden cold temperatures.
Swarm of bees makes ‘unauthorised landing’ at airport
A swarm of bees made a surprise appearance at Edinburgh Airport.
The unusual passengers were not looking to board a plane for warmer climates, but instead they landed on a grit bin in a car park earlier in September.
Airport bosses described it as an ‘unauthorised landing’ and joked that the airport was a ‘hive of activity’ during the summer holidays.
However, the concrete car park was deemed unsuitable for the swarm, so the local beekeepers were called to the rescue.
Beekeeper Stephen Readman, president of Edinburgh and Midlothian Beekeepers’ Association, said: ‘I thought beekeepers were finished with swarms this year, so it was a surprise to hear about the unauthorised honeybee landing at Edinburgh Airport.
‘Swarming usually occurs in late spring and summer when the queen leaves the colony with the adult flying bees. They leave behind enough young bees, larvae, eggs and prepared queen cells to keep the previous colony going.
‘A swarm will travel to a new location and may land on trees, bushes, walls, posts or anything convenient to wait while the scouts find a new permanent home.’
Delays on Avanti and London Northwestern trains
Commuters travelling through Watford and Milton Keynes Central should stock up on patience before travelling today after an earlier signalling fault is still affecting trains.
All lines have now reopened after the signalling system fault at Leighton Buzzard, but trains from London Euston running between the stations could still be cancelled or delayed by up to 20 minutes.
Here are the routes that are set to be affected until the end of the day.
- Avanti between London Euston and Birmingham New Street / Chester / Holyhead / Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Piccadilly / Lancaster / Blackpool North / Glasgow Central / Edinburgh
- London Northwestern Railway between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central / Birmingham New Street / Crewe
A-road closure in Hounslow after crash
The A315 Staines Road near Heathrow has been closed in both directions since the morning after an earlier crash.
An investigation is ongoing, and the road remains closed both ways between A244 Hounslow Road and Barrack Road, traffic service Inrix said.
Buses 116, 117 and 235 are diverted.
Traffic is currently coping well in the area.
Train lines reopen after major signalling fault
After a major signalling problem affecting the London Overground and Southern trains for hours, lines have now reopened.
However, the coast is not clear yet for passengers – trains could still be cancelled or delayed by up to half an hour as service recovers.
The fault wreaked havoc on trains and the Overground between Shepherds Bush, Wembley Central and Willesden Junction throughout lunchtime.
Southern told passengers to keep checking their journey before travelling although all lines have reopened.
Manchester and Stansted airports also broke records last month
As well as Heathrow having a very busy August, two other airports had a record-breaking summer, according to figures released today.
Brits have clearly been desperate for a holiday, as Manchester Airports Group, which owns and operates Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands Airports, said passenger numbers reached nearly seven million in August. This is up 6.6% from the same month in 2023.
Individually, Manchester Airport and Stansted Airport near London both had their busiest ever months in August, with 3.4 million and 3.1 million passengers respectively.
Pret sold a massive amount of coffee at Heathrow this summer
Arriving bleary eyed for an early flight, it’s no wonder lots of people immediately look for their morning coffee.
This could explain why Pret sold so many coffees at Heathrow Airport alone in July and August this year: more than 950,000 cups, almost hitting a million.
The airport released figures on customers’ coffee drinking habits alongside the record-breaking passenger numbers we mentioned earlier.
I wonder if they will sell the same numbers in September now that Pret’s drink subscription has controversially been withdrawn?
Delays of up to 45 minutes on Avanti and London Northwestern trains
Signalling problems are causing a headache for passengers travelling between Watford Junction and Milton Keynes Central this afternoon.
People have been warned to expect delays of up to 45 minutes due to the problem at Leighton Buzzard, which means trains are having to go slower than usual.
Disruption is expected to continue until 1.45pm. The routes affected are:
Avanti between London Euston and Birmingham New Street / Chester / Holyhead / Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Piccadilly / Lancaster / Blackpool North / Glasgow Central / Edinburgh
London Northwestern Railway between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central / Birmingham New Street / Crewe
No Overground or Southern trains on certain routes expected anytime soon
No trains at all are running on the London Overground between Stratford and Clapham Junction and Southern between Watford Junction and East Croydon, National Rails says.
This is due to a signalling failure between Shepherds Bush and Wembley Central/Willesden Junction which has blocked all lines.
While Network Rail said this issue should have been fixed by now, the association now says there will be no trains until ‘approximately’ 2pm.
A1 traffic finally easing
Inrix, a transport analytic firm, reported to YorkshireLive: ‘Traffic easing, accident cleared on A1 Southbound from A162/A1(M, Darrington) to B6474/Went Edge Road (Wentbridge South/Kirk Smeaton Turn Off, Wentbridge).
‘All lanes have been re-opened.’
M25 congestion continues as vehicle is recovered
A vehicle recovery effort along the M25 is likely causing some headaches for drivers.
One of four lanes is closed on the M25 clockwise between J8 (Reigate/Redhill) and J9 (Leatherhead/Epsom), according to Motorway Cameras.
Normal traffic conditions aren’t expected until 12pm.
M25 anti-clockwise within J16 (M40 J1A/Uxbridge) is also seeing a fair amount of traffic but should be easing up very shortly.
Latest on the A1 travel chaos
National Highways’ Yorkshire wing has issued a new update on the A1, also called the Great North Road, which has been suffering delays for most of this morning.
The agency said in a post on X: ‘The vehicles involved in the earlier collision on the A1 south between J40 (Darrington) and J39 (Doncaster) have now been recovered from the scene.
‘All lanes have been reopened with residual delays of up to two hours on the approach.’
London trains delayed, cancelled or revised following signal fault
Commuters hoping to use two major London train lines today are being asked to use different routes.
London Overground between Stratford and Clapham Junction and Southern between Watford Junction and East Croydon are seeing disruptions, National Rail says.
A service update says: ‘A fault with the signalling system between Shepherds Bush and Willesden Junction means all lines are blocked.
‘As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised. This is expected until 12:30pm.’
Major road seeing delays of up to an hour and a half after collision
Things aren’t looking too great on the A1, a major north-south motorway which connects London with Edinburgh, according to the National Highways.
Multiple junctions are experiencing severe congestion, with delays of as little as 10 minutes for some and one and a half hours for others.
One driver stuck on the A1 southbound said on X that delays are ‘coming up for two hours now’.
- The A1M southbound between junctions J41 and J40 to A1 southbound between the M62 and the junction with the A639 will see delays of an hour and a half until 10.45am after a collision.
- The A1 northbound between the junctions with the A603 and the A421 is seeing 10-minute delays until 10.45am.
- The A1 northbound between the A167 Washington Birtley and the junction with the A692 is seeing 15-minute-long delays until 10.45 am.
- The A1 northbound between the A638 and the junction with the M62 is seeing 10-minute delays due to congestion.
- The A1 southbound between the junctions with the M62 and the A639 is seeing delays an an hour due to a road collision until 12.15pm.
Overground part-suspended
TfL has just said that the Overground is partly suspended along a large chunk of the line in central, south and northwest London.
‘No service between Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction due to a signal fault in the Shepherd’s Bush area,’ the agency says.
Heathrow saw record-breaking August – and it’s partly thanks to Taylor Swift
Britons, it seems, were really eager this summer to get out of the country.
Heathrow is on course to serve 30 million passengers between June and September, which would be the most for that period in the London airport’s history.
Take August where in that month alone, the airport handled 8,000,000 people – a 5.5% rise. This is about 130,000 passengers a day. Nearly two weeks were more than 260,000 people.
And Heathrow can partly thank Taylor Swift for this spike, with her Eras tour bringing in about 40,000 passengers for the European leg of her tour.
