EastEnders legend Danny Dyer has issued a plea to bring back Mick Carter, fuelling hopes that a return may be on the cards in time for the 40th anniversary.
For a show that is bringing back David Wicks, Bianca Butcher and Ruby Allen, it’s more than likely.
Mick was last seen on screen at Christmas when he was driven into the ocean during a car chase with Janine Butcher.
Since that moment, Mick has been presumed dead, with Linda (Kellie Bright) going through horrendous grief.
But, let’s not forget soap law. If we don’t see a body, there is no death.
And everyone has pretty much anticipated a comeback for Mick at some stage, even if just for an episode or two to clarify his fate.
Danny has been very busy since leaving, but he is clearly not over his character.
At the National Television Awards 2024, he was presenting a prize and shared his love to his ‘EastEnders family’.
Standing beside comedy actress Katherine Parkinson, he bellowed ‘bring back Mick!’
We are with you there, Danny!
When he then turned to Katherine and asked if she agreed, to which she deadpan replied, ‘who?’
Okay, it might have been staged, but still funny.
Mind you, there are mixed messages at play. Recently, we caught up with Danny ahead of the debut of his successful drama Mr Bigstuff, now confirmed for a second series.
And he told us that his serial drama days were behind him.
‘I was coming to the end of my run, I had a wonderful time there, but I felt I needed to go out and try some other stuff, if there’s any other stuff out there – nothing was guaranteed – and this script landed on my lap. It really confirmed to me why I’d left.’
Unfortunately for soap fans, Danny went on to admit that his time in soap has come to an end, joking that even Coronation Street was off the cards.
‘Ooh no, don’t fancy a stint in Corrie,’ he joked.
‘No, I’m ready for new challenges now. I think the beautiful thing about what we do as actors is that you just don’t know what’s around the corner.
‘That’s what keeps it petrifying and exciting at the same time. You can’t plan it. You’re not guaranteed anything in our industry so it’s just about praying that you get opportunities.’
Danny’s former on-screen wife Kellie Bright – who plays Linda Carter – also called for Mick’s return on the red carpet of Wednesday’s NTAs.
Speaking to Digital Spy, she said: ‘I would love to do anything with Danny Dyer – work-related, just clarify that! But I have no idea if he’s been asked to come back.
‘I would love to see Mick and Linda together again… I know that people would love it. We’ll see. I’d be surprised, but we’d see.’
Kellie also posted a selfie of her and Danny together as they reunited at the ceremony, captioning it: ‘Always and forever @officialdannydyer #mickandlinda.’
The NTAs brought big results for the soaps, with Corrie’s Peter Ash landing the Serial Drama Performance gong for his portrayal of Motor Neurone Disease patient Paul Foreman.
And Emmerdale stole the big prize this year. Maybe with Danny back, it will be EastEnders’ year in 2025.
