Neighbours have described hearing screams and running out of their homes to find a woman dying after a suspected ‘stabbing’.
The woman, 35, was found with ‘multiple wounds’ in Bury, about six miles north of Manchester, last night.
Officers had responded to ‘reports of a concern for welfare’ in Walnut Avenue at about 10.30pm.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Walnut Avenue, a small residential road by the M66, is ‘usually so quiet’, a neighbour, making the screams they heard yesterday evening all too clear.
‘My daughter heard the screaming and the police were called straight away,’ she said.
‘If she hadn’t heard that, you can’t even begin to imagine.’
The resident added that they heard it ‘kicking off’ before seeing a neighbour sprint across the road to help the woman.
‘She was face down, he felt her pulse but she was already gone,’ the woman added.
‘It’s usually so quiet around here, nothing like that ever happens.’
Another neighbour said: ‘Things like this don’t happen around here, it’s usually so quiet. We can’t believe it, it’s so sad.’
‘They’ve been here all morning.,’ said an elderly neighbour.
‘The last time something like this happened it was two years ago, it was awful. And now this.’
A murder investigation has been launched and a suspect believed to be involved has been identified.
The police ‘does not pose a threat to the wider community at the time’, the force said. Officers are currently not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
The victim’s next of kin have been informed and supported by specialist officers.
Forensic teams were spotted going in and out of a property on Walnut Avenue, having first arrived at 1am today, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Detective Inspector Matthew Hamer, from GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: ‘First and foremost, I want to pass my condolences on to the family of the woman, who are being supported by our officers during this devastating time.
‘I know that incidents of this nature will cause shock and distress in the community, but I want residents to know that we are working to piece together a timeline of last night’s events and what exactly went on.
‘While we have identified a suspect at this time, we do not believe that they pose any wider threat and at this time no one else is being sought.
‘However, we are still investigating all lines of enquiry and will be on the scene for the coming days.
‘Extra officers will be in the area and I would encourage you to speak to them if you have any concerns or worries.
‘If you have any information in relation to last night’s incident, I would urge you to contact police with anything you can pass on. It could be something small – but it all aids our investigation.’
