EastEnders’ star Angela Wynter has revealed what’s next for her character Yolande Trueman following her sexual assault at the hands of Pastor Clayton (Howard Saddler).
Viewers of the BBC soap watched in horror earlier this year, as the sinister church leader sexually abused Yolande at the community centre.
After weeks of turmoil, Yolande eventually found the courage to report his crimes to the police, but was left devastated when they claimed to have insufficient evidence to charge him.
However, a second woman called Delia later come forward to meet with Yolande, revealing that Clayton had attacked her during his time at a previous parish.
After they both gave fresh statements to the police, Clayton was then charged with two counts of sexual assault.
The storyline is now set to be revisited, Angela has revealed to Digital Spy.
She said: ‘She’s going to be fighting for justice for herself. She wants the pastor to go to court and see his day. And it’s a hard slog. That’s all I can say!’
Speaking of the plot’s significance, Angela continued: ‘I’m really grateful to have been given the responsibility to carry that story, because it’s a very important story. A very important topic that we need to keep plugging at, to try and erase it from society, if ever we can.’
EastEnders fans have been ‘blown away’ by actress Angela’s portrayal of Yolande, with viewers on social media calling for her to win awards for her performance.
Earlier this week, she was nominated for a National Television Award in the Serial Drama Performance category, and is so up for Best Actress at this year’s Inside Soap Awards.
Speaking of the latter, she said: “It’s lovely. I’m a little numb, because I don’t really have the expectation of winning. It’s just nice to be nominated. It’s nice, it’s rewarding, it makes me feel validated.’
