A beloved 2000s sitcom is making a return 15 years after it last aired – but with a big twist.

Everybody Hates Chris aired between 2006 and 2009 and was created by Chris Rock and Ali LeRoi.

It was loosely based on Rock’s personal experience growing up in Brooklyn from 1982 to 1987.

It starred Tyler James Williams as the titular character, with Rock acting as the narrator of the story.

After four seasons the show eventually ended after the comedian said he felt the story was ready to wrap up, however it’s now coming back.

But this time it is going to be an animated series titled Everybody Still Hates Chris.

In 2021 it was first reported an animated reboot was in the works, however this week the casting for the show has been revealed, with much of the cast set to reprise their roles.

Rock will again narrate the series, while Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold will now voice their characters, Chris’ parents, Julius and Rochelle.

However Tyler, who currently stars as Gregory Eddie on the sitcom Abbott Elementary, won’t be part of the new series, which Chris instead to be voiced by Tim Johnson Jr.

Other new cast members include Ozioma Akagha and Terrence Little Gardenhigh as Chris’ siblings Tonya and Drew, and Gunnar Sizemore as his nerdy school friend Greg, as reported by Variety.

In a statement Rock said he was ‘very excited to introduce the world to another funny side of my childhood’.

The update on the reboot was celebrated by some fans, with X user Diamond posting: ‘Our childhood is coming back to us.’

‘I’m definitely watching it,’ another shared.

‘Longevity in the entertainment business is tough. So, when I see moves as such I must applaud. Everybody Hates Chris animated series was a wonderful idea,’ Quentin said.

However, another, froyo_ral wrote: ‘I understand that investing in a brand-new show with a brand-new concept and idea is risky but why can’t we let things be iconic and leave it alone.’

But many others said they were excited to see if the reboot would live up to the original and would be tuning in to make comparisons.

The reboot will be released on Comedy Central and Paramount Plus.

The original series of Everybody Hates Chris is streaming on ITVX.
