Tesco has meal deal fans scratching their heads with its release of a limited-edition sandwich.

The new addition has brought the greasy spoon caff experience to supermarket shoppers in the form of a classic British sarnie, but diners have an issue with one ingredient in particular – cold chips.

The sandwich with the bizarre ingredient is the Beechwood ham, egg and chips, available as part of a Tesco meal deal or for £3 when bought individually.

People have likened the chips to ‘maggots’ because of their appearance. ‘At first glance, I thought I could see maggots,’ wrote Justine Watkins.

Donna Charnock had similar thoughts: ‘Is it just me, but it doesn’t look like chips, it looks like [there’s] something moving about in it just saying.’

Donna Louise McGregor wrote: ‘Cold, stale chips.’ She followed it up with a sick emoji. David Monks agreed saying: ‘The only form of potato that should be eaten cold is crisps.’

Others had even more scathing reviews though.

‘I had the Beechwood ham, egg and chips limited edition sandwich, and all I can say is what was the group partaking in when they came up with that pile of crap,’ commented Vladislav Basarab Dracul on Facebook. ‘No flavour at all.’

Sharon King said: ‘That actually sounds revolting tbh, hard pass.’

LM Rizzo wasn’t impressed either, writing: ‘Just got this. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. It’s not crispy. It’s like soggy potatoes.’

Featuring white bread, jam-packed with Beechwood-smoked ham, egg mayo, salt and vinegar fries and ketchup, it emulates a typical order at a no-frills local caff or pub.

Tesco sandwich creator, Sarah Bryer, is more positive about this supermarket creation. She said: ‘We think it could go on to become a breakfast classic.

‘We know how well loved the chip butty is with the nation, plus we have seen a massive surge of people admitting their guilty pleasure of a crisp sandwich on social media, combined with British pub favourite ham, egg and chips.

‘The mini salt and vinegar fries give a crunch to the Beechwood smoked ham and chunky, rich, egg mayonnaise.’

It’s part of a new global cuisine range, which also includes a Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese Wrap and a Korean-inspired Spicy Gochujang Chicken Sub.

The 421-calorie butty contains over a quarter of the daily allowance of salt (1.65g) and nearly a fifth of recommended fat (13.1g).

There were a couple of happy sandwich fans though.

Philip John Littler said, ‘I’m no fan of supermarket sandwiches but I’m on a mission to get one of these now,’ and Gracie Sale added: ‘Yum.’
