Tesco makes huge change to pricing on supermarket shelves

Tesco customers love bagging a bargain with Clubcard prices – and it’s now getting even easier to save on your weekly shop.

The supermarket has announced it will be changing the way it shows member-only prices, meaning you’ll always know if you’re getting the best deal.

The cheaper Clubcard price, available to holders of the retailer’s loyalty card, is typically shown in a yellow bubble beside the regular price tag of an item on the shelf or online.

Previously you could only see the unit price (eg £1 per 100g) on the original label.

But as part of a rollout across Tesco’s 2,866 stores, you’ll soon be able to see the unit cost for the promotional price too.

This will allow shoppers to compare similar items of different sizes, allowing you to easily tell if the offer is actually the cheapest option.

The move comes after an investigation from Which? revealed supermarkets were ‘hiking prices to make it look like loyalty card gives a discount’.

The consumer group called for ‘potentially dodgy tactics’ associated with member-only pricing to be scrutinised, prompting a probe from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that began in January 2023. Full findings are expected by the end of this year.

Which? has welcomed Tesco’s efforts to improve transparency, with Rocio Concha, director of policy and advocacy, commenting: ‘The lack of unit pricing on Tesco’s Clubcard offers was a glaring omission and we warned that this approach could be breaking the law last summer, so it’s good to see the nation’s largest supermarket stepping up to do the right thing by making this important change.

‘We look forward to seeing this rolled out quickly across all stores and online so shoppers can benefit as soon as possible.

‘The government also needs to now update outdated pricing rules so all shoppers can easily compare value.’

Clubcard holders should also ensure they don’t let their loyalty points expire before the deadline, as £18m worth of vouchers first issued in February 2022 are due to become invalid at the end of this month.

After February 29, any accrued vouchers still unclaimed will be lost forever, so it’s worth double checking your stockpile to avoid anything going to waste.
