Remember when Freddos were only 10p and you didn’t need to take out a mortgage to buy a packet of Mini Eggs?

Well, it seems those days are firmly in the past, as Cadbury has officially confirmed they are raising prices across their range ahead of Easter.

Mondelēz, who own Cadbury, defended the price hikes — including a staggering £17.50 for a bumper bag of Mini Eggs — saying they were a ‘last resort’.

A Mondelēz International spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘Making changes to the price of our products is always a last resort, however, costs across our supply chain have risen steeply.

‘Core ingredients we heavily rely on, like cocoa and sugar are a lot more expensive, while the cost of energy, packaging, and transport also remain high.

‘As a result, we are having to make some carefully considered price increases across our range so we can continue to provide consumers with the brands they love without compromising on taste or quality.’

Mondelēz also added that the cost of our favourite snacks isn’t just their responsibility.

They added: ‘While products have a recommended price, retailers are free to set their own prices.’

This comes after the confectionery giant came under fire from fans, including presenter and Strictly star Dan Walker, for the eye-watering cost of a 1kg bag of Mini Eggs

Dan shared a snap of the product in WHSmith in Sheffield’s Meadowhall Shopping Centre, where it was being sold for £17.50.

To make matters worse, the retailer claimed this hefty price was one of the store’s ‘best offers’ at the time.

Unsurprisingly, the social media post prompted outcry with some claiming they could do a ‘weekly shop’ for the same price of the sweets.

‘Stop the world, I want to get off,’ proclaimed user Helen Brearley, while Lizzie Martin quipped: ‘You need a mortgage for a bag of mini eggs these days.’

‘£1.75 per 100g?! That’s shocking,’ chimed in user youandmei, as katebutler said: ‘At that price, I can do my weekly food shop!’

At other stores, the 1kg packets of Mini Eggs are sold for similarly high prices, costing £15 on Cadbury Gifts Direct, £15 on Uber Eats, £12.50 in Waitrose, and £14.60 at Ocado.

But it’s not just the large packets of Mini Eggs that have increased in price. Customers have also noticed that regular-sized bags cost more of late.

X user Rowena Coxwell recently pointed out this devastating blow for chocolate lovers everywhere.

‘Having to take out a loan to buy a bag of Mini Eggs wtf are these prices,’ they wrote. Others branded the costs ‘shambolic’ and ‘disgusting’.

To put this into context, 80g bags have gone up by 25% in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons, increasing from £1 to £1.25, a spike of 25%. Ouch.

The 110g Mini Eggs Bar has also increased in Tesco and Morrisons by 25% from £1 to £1.25. And in Tesco and Sainsbury’s, a 38.3g carton of Mini Eggs Carton 38.3g is up 20% from 50p to 60p.

Mini Eggs aren’t the only iconic Cadbury products that have gone up in price. In January, the price of a 95g bar of Dairy Milk increased by 8% to £1.35.

While at Christmas it was revealed that the price of the Cadbury Milk Tray had also soared, with an increase of 50% since 2013. A decade ago the chocolate box would set you back £6, but it now costs £9 in most major supermarkets, despite the size remaining the same.

Meanwhile, Cadbury’s Roses also fell victim to the dreaded shrinkflation, shrinking 45% from 850g in 2013, to 550g in 2023. And as they got smaller, you also paid more, with the price rising 50p, from £5 to £5.50.

Tubs of Cadbury Heroes also shrank by 29% from 780g to 550g over the same time period.
