Who in a million years would have thought that Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman)’s future in Coronation Street could be at risk because of Taylor Swift?
Not Taylor Swift the global phenomenon singer songwriter, to be clear. The one who’s at the centre of all the bother is a dog, who Evelyn rescues after she spots her being badly treated by a man at the precinct.
Evelyn takes the dog back to the family and Hope (Isabella Flanagan) and Ruby (Billie Naylor) fall instantly in love, naming the dog Taylor after their favourite singer.
Next time Evelyn visits the precinct she’s cornered by the man she took the dog from and he wants to know where she is, but Evelyn denies all knowledge.
‘He threatens Evelyn twice and he is pretty dangerous and thuggish,’ Maureen Lipman told us. ‘Evelyn’s obviously scared to her boots but she’s not admitting that.’
The man then turns his attention to Tyrone (Alan Halsall), calling at the garage to hand him his contact details and warning him that he wants the dog back by 6pm otherwise there’ll be serious consequences.
A panicked Tyrone knows that Roy (David Neilson) has taken the dog to a rescue centre, but Evelyn decides they have no choice but to go and get the dog back and return her to her owner.
‘When he threatens to hurt Tyrone if she continues it is a real dilemma as she is so fond of Tyrone. She realises she has to take a step back to protect her family,’ Maureen explained.
Evelyn is keen to expose the man, whom she suspects of running an illegal puppy farm. Maureen Lipman, a dog lover herself, told us that this storyline is highlighting an important issue.
‘I know the RSPCA have been involved with advising,’ she said.

‘I did some research of my own and was shocked by what I discovered. I had not realised that these puppies are sold for £2000 a throw and these people are not registered and they’re earning billions with puppy farms springing up all over the place.
‘There’s something called Lucy’s law which means anyone wanting to get a new puppy or kitten in England must now buy direct from a breeder, or consider adopting from a rescue centre instead. A lot of people are still unaware of this especially with covid when everyone was wanting dogs. It’s good that we are making more people aware.’
Evelyn’s encounters with the dog owner have proved how ruthless he can be and she becomes convinced that he’ll turn the tables and report her to the police for stealing his dog – and she could face serious consequences as a result.
Could this be the end of Evelyn’s time in Coronation Street?
