A mum was forced to wedge her child inside a luggage rack on a packed train after paying £180 for tickets.

Bee Rowlatt was travelling from York to London King’s Cross with her four children when they had to take drastic measures to find space.

The busy service meant they had to sit on the floor and, in the case of one of her son’s, make use of baggage compartments.

Ms Rowlatt posted a picture of the Grand Central Rail train carriage on Twitter.

She captioned the photo: ‘York to KX on @GC_Rail – no seats anywhere, floors and corridors completely blocked and one of my kids in a luggage rack. This trop cost £182.94.’

The image shows others spread out across the floors, with no space between the doors and the seats.

Grand Central did respond to Ms Rowlatt’s tweet, saying ‘apologies for the discomfort. ^LA.’

However this was not enough to rectify the situation, with the 51-year-old replying ‘”apologies for the discomfort La” is not what I was hoping for to be honest’.

Others were quick to agree with Ms Rowlatt, and shared their bad experiences as well.

One commented: ‘An absolute disgrace. It was like this when I’d travel home from Uni on a Friday having paid £200 for a ticket and often not even being able to get to my seat. Our railways are an absolute joke.’

‘This is why people are still choosing to drive rather than take the train,’ said another.

One account wrote: ‘Train from Bedford to Kettering today, £16.10 for a 20-minute journey, passengers packed in like sardines. Only available real estate a square foot next to the toilet, which stank to high heaven.’
