Katie Piper has revealed she had to undergo an emergency eye operation this week after being left in ‘extreme pain’.

The presenter and activist was left with long-lasting effects after she was the victim of a horrific acid attack in 2008, organised by her ex-boyfriend.

Sharing photos of her eye bandaged up, Katie, 38, explained: ‘Emergency Operation for me! 🤕

‘On Saturday my husband noticed a small black circle in my blind eye, I was excited thinking I had a pupil again, but by Sunday my left eye was extremely painful and couldn’t tolerate light, so I patched it up and put it down to old injuries. I’m used to being in some level of discomfort and I went to work.

‘By Sunday night I felt nausea and in extreme pain. I got in touch with my eye specialist @sherazdaya @centreforsightuk and unfortunately he confirmed the black circle was a hole in my eye and the eye had perforated. This had always been a fear that it would happen.’

Eye perforation is when the cornea has been penetrated, leaving it damaged. It can cause difficulty in vision and persistent eye pain.

Katie went on: ‘Yesterday @sherazdaya sourced tissue for me and operated on me. I cannot thank him and his team enough, their knowledge and expertise but also how kind and caring they all are.

‘There maybe some evil people in this world but there are also some pretty incredible people doing amazing things for people on a daily basis. Huge thank you team @sherazdaya @centreforsightuk You are the best! 🙏.’

Fans and friends have been quick to share their support and well-wishes for Katie, with Alexandra Burke saying: ‘Sending you love darling and positive healing energy xxx.’

Loose Women star Jane Moore said: ‘Sending love and a big hug xx,’ while Nicola Adams added: ‘Sending positive vibes ❤️❤️.’

In 2008, Katie was attacked by an ex-boyfriend and an accomplice who threw sulphuric acid in her face, leaving her with severe burns and blind in one eye.

The star, who almost lost her life and faced time in intensive care, underwent multiple surgeries for her facial disfigurement, some ongoing to this day.

Despite the horrific attack, Katie was determined to come back stronger, and later released a documentary, Katie Piper: My Beautiful Face, to raise awareness about facial disfigurements and tell her story.

She has since carved a major career in TV and launched the Katie Piper Foundation, which helps other burns victims.
