BBC controller Danny Cohen has confirmed new singing contest
The Voice won’t be up against ITV juggernaut
The X Factor in the schedule, as rumours circulate that former judges
Cheryl Cole and
Dannii Minogue could be reunited.
Cohen, who has said the programme will still be screened in prime time on BBC1, has promised TV talent show fans that the broadcaster will try to ensure the new programme doesn’t clash with the ITV ratings hit.
‘I wouldnât like to compare the show to The X Factor, it is just a big new show for the BBC – and we will work hard to avoid our show clashing with The X Factor on ITV,’ he said.
‘The Voice is a really stand-out format and it has got a lot of warmth and heart… There is a real freshness to the fact you are picking people not on what they look like, just on how they sing.’
Rumours are mounting that former X Factor judge Cheryl Cole – who was dumped from Simon Cowell ‘s US version of the show – will be sitting on The Voice’s judging panel .
And now speculation is growing that Dannii Minogue will join her.
The pair worked together for three series of the UK X Factor, before Cheryl left for the American version – only to be unceremoniously dropped before the show even aired.
Dannii jumped ship shortly beforehand to focus on her judging role on Australia’s Got Talent.
Angry they had lost their favourite judges, many X Factor fans claimed they would not watch this year’s series of the show – which means taking the popular singers on as judges will be a tempting prospect for The Voice bosses.
But since the BBC has only just acquired the rights to The Voice, Cohen is remaining vague about who he’d like to see as a judge on the programme.
‘In terms of judges, we want a real range of musical styles, that is something they have done well in the States,’ he told the Mirror.
Originally a Dutch programme, The Voice has been a phenomenal success in the US and after a tense bidding war with ITV, the BBC forked out £22million for the rights to broadcast it in the UK.
