October Highlights

DIVERSION PROGRAM LAUNCH: Osborne and the Bronx District Attorney’s Office have received funding to pilot a new pre-arraignment diversion program. Our staff will provide intervention services – initially at one Bronx precinct – to prospective participants who have been charged with Desk Appearance Tickets-eligible misdemeanors immediately after their arrest. The pilot will be funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

ANNUAL TOY DRIVE: You can bring joy to a child affected by incarceration this holiday season. The children Osborne serves have hand-picked their favorite toys, and you can make their wishes come true by ordering from our curated wish list. [Purchase a toy today.]

WENDELL WALTERS NAMED NOTABLE LEADER: Wendell Walters, Osborne’s first-ever Chief Housing Officer, was named one of Crain’s New York Business’ 100 Notable Black Leaders from around New York State. In his role, Wendell is managing the development, strategic planning, and service delivery for a growing portfolio of transitional and permanent supportive housing. [Read more here.]

OSBORNE AT THE U.N.: International visitors to the U.N. seeking to learn about the U.S. criminal legal system and deepen their understanding of civil and criminal procedures took away lessons on advancing collaborative solutions from a recent presentation by Osborne staff. Andrea Goupalsingh, Vice President of Court Services and Decarceration (second from left above), Steuben Vega, Director of Workforce Development (third from left), and Kiamesha Reed, Family Services Specialist (far right), shared successes from Osborne’s reentry, employment, and ATI programs in a session that was followed by a Q&A.

BENEFIT HONORS HOUSING CHAMPIONS: Osborne’s 2024 Annual Benefit was held October 22 to honor Champion of Mission Jamie Rubin, the Board Chair of the New York City Housing Authority, and Partner in Innovation Molly Wasow Park, Commissioner of the Department of Social Services, our partner at Fulton Community Reentry Center. The event raised $850,000 to support Osborne’s mission. [Read a recap and see photos here.]

Advocacy Alert

The New York State Legislature passed the Child Sensitive Arrest bill during the 2024 legislative session, and it now awaits the Governor's signature. Inspired by the courageous stories shared by members of Osborne's Youth Action Council, this bill aims to minimize the trauma children face when witnessing their parents' arrest. Please help us get this bill across the finish line by contacting Governor Hochul today and urging her to sign it into law before the end of the year. [Find out more and take action here.]

My Osborne

Grants & Giving

Osborne is grateful to the producers of Water for Elephants: The Musical, who recently made a block of tickets available to residents of Osborne’s Fulton Community Reentry Center and Marcus Garvey Supportive Housing and the staff who support them. [See a group photo here.] For some who took in the show on October 15, it was the first time they had ever seen a live performance. If you have a similar opportunity for the people we serve that you’d like to discuss, please contact us at [email protected].
