Our world is experiencing a convergence between the physical and digital. With breakthroughs in AI, 5G, and cloud computing driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution, industries are transforming at a rapid speed. In fact, the World Economic Forum predicts that digitalization will account for 70% of total global economic growth over the next five years. We're already seeing the impact, from smart cities optimizing energy to AI-driven healthcare diagnostics. No wonder over 170 countries, including Ireland, are developing national strategies for an AI-powered future. This digital revolution builds on a familiar foundation: from steam engines to assembly lines, every industrial era has reshaped our economies. Yet, the scale of today’s digital impact is unparalleled, fueled by the rapid pace of technological innovation. Huawei’s 2024 Global Digitalization Index (GDI) – developed in collaboration with IDC –assess digital maturity across 77 countries, capturing 93% of global GDP and 80% of the world's population. By categorizing nations as Frontrunners, Adopters, and Starters, we map where each country stands on the path toward digital transformation. A key insight? The gap in digital infrastructure investment is widening. Since 2019, the ratio of digital investment among Frontrunners, Adopters, and Starters has been 18:3:1, underscoring the diverging economic paths these nations may face. The ROI for every $1 spent on digital transformation is huge: an $8.3 return for a country’s digital economy. The "Digital Dividend Effect" is real. Ireland is in the top 10 of frontrunner nations, for every one-point increase in GDI score correlates with a $945 GDP boost per capita. From Revolution to Evolution: Industry 5.0 places humans in the center You may be thinking Industry 5.0, what is that and when is it coming? I know that we are still embracing the Industry 4.0 era and partnering across industries to accelerate the digitalization journey. But the shift from Industry 4.0 to 5.0 has already begun and it is expected to happen much more quickly than the transitions between earlier industrial revolutions. I see Industry 5.0 as more of an evolution versus a revolution, building on the digitalization journey that enterprises are already on and one that embraces technologies like AI, Cloud Computing and 6G in a more human-centric, personal and sustainable way. What excites me about Industry 5.0 is that it will enable people to do the things that we are uniquely good at versus doing things we don’t want to do or are not able to do. Future technologies will make a significant difference in improving worker safety and I believe future jobs will blend advanced technologies and digital skills with uniquely human skills to yield the highest level of productivity, efficiency, safety and sustainability. Nokia has recently announced its Exponential Era series with Bloomberg media to highlight that the potential of communication networks goes beyond simply connecting people and things. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Hannah Fry, mathematician and broadcaster, and talk about the coming fifth industrial revolution and how it puts people back in the equation. I was delighted to participate to the High-level panel on progress made in the implementation of and follow-up to the outcomes of the #WSIS at the regional and international level during the 27th session of the #UN #CSDT. It was an opportunity to highlight the progress made by Tunisia in implementing the #WSIS outcomes and in achieving the #SDG. Operators in the Gulf Cooperation Council are building broadband to remote areas and reaching population-wide 4G/5G coverage. As the mobile market saturates, revenue growth will come from fixed broadband and value-added digital services. Other Middle Eastern countries will likely look for opportunities for revenue growth in the mobile segment and connectivity improvements. Some operators are likely to prioritise investing in 4G/LTE coverage as it will be more profitable than transitioning from 4G to 5G. Not hard to see how every Telco is high on GenAI dopamine .. but so very 'differently' .. did we realize ?? As you walk into corridors of leading Telcos and table war-rooms on how Mobile, Network & Edge can blend via GenAI.. you see how quickly all teams join the bandwagon (BSS, front-office, network ops, vas, device-monetization, OSS). There are 6 who we see pushing the envelope - AT&T, SKTelecom, NTT, Deutsche Telekom, Orange and Vodafone. #ATT's work on utilizing transformer models to drive its predictive maintenance programs, accurately forecasting equipment failures and scheduling preemptive interventions is a key example. #SKTelecom is pushing the boundary further by use of AI-driven micro-edge compute w.r.t ULL partnerships supporting autonomous vehicles and smart city infrastructures, positioning itself at the forefront. #Vodafone is harnessing neural networks to optimize its 5G rollouts, employing AI-driven analytics to identify optimal deployment strategies and accelerate the delivery of high-speed networks. #NTT Docomo, an exemplary player not often highlighted in this space, is integrating AI with quantum computing to develop next-gen cryptographic solutions, ensuring unparalleled data security in an increasingly connected world. Over the past five years, we've seen a remarkable transformation in internet speeds and connectivity. Globally, average download speeds have surged, with mobile speeds increasing by 60% and fixed broadband by 30%. This trend is mirrored in Egypt, where continuous investments in infrastructure have significantly enhanced our digital landscape. In Egypt, the average internet speed has skyrocketed from 6.5 Mbps in 2019 to 56.61 Mbps by 2023, according to Ookla. This significant improvement has positioned Egypt at the top in North Africa for fixed broadband speeds. Telecom Egypt, dominating the fixed broadband sector with over 80% market share and wholesaling its infrastructure to other providers controlling the remaining 20%, has strategically invested in its infrastructure. By developing its IP and transmission networks, expanding fiber to outdoor cabinets (FTTC), upgrading ADSL to VDSL, and deploying FTTH/B in greenfield and gated communities, we have significantly boosted broadband speeds. This has increased entry-level speeds from 5 Mbps to 30 Mbps with only a 9% price increase. Despite this remarkable progress, a significant gap remains compared to more advanced markets. To bridge this gap, it is essential to facilitate fiber investment to unlock connectivity through widespread FTTH/B deployment. MVNO Europe: Draghi’s recommendations undermine the crucial role competition can play in fostering innovation, investments, and the interests of both consumers and businesses. MVNO Europe (European Association of MVNOs) says it is deeply concerned by Mr. #Draghi’s recommendations for the telecom sector, in particular its focus on consolidation of the industry in the hands of a few large operators, and proposals to modify spectrum policy and competition policy to artificially drive such consolidation. "We regret to see that the telecom chapter of the Draghi’s report blatantly ignores the value of competition as a driver for investments and innovation, unlike other chapters of the same study." MVNO Europe would like to highlight that MVNOs do contribute significantly to financing infrastructure by paying substantial wholesale fees to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) for network access (MVNOs pay MNOs for each minute/SMS/megabyte used). This aligns with Commissioner-designate Virkkunen’s mission to incentivize investments in digital infrastructure, demonstrating that MVNOs play an active role in sustaining Europe’s telecom infrastructure and should not be disregarded. #MVNO Europe regrets the report’s misleading association between the number of operators, including MVNOs, the European telecom sector’s alleged low profitability, and its alleged underperformance. The report’s call for change to EU policy and regulation to artificially favor the largest operators echoes the narrative advanced by ETNO (now Connect Europe). The suggestion that Europe has “too many” operators compared to the US and China ignores the value and welfare that competition brings to the market and misrepresents the impact of policies, legislation and regulation designed to foster it. Contrary to the report’s suggestion that Europe is lagging behind, many EU Member States in fact are leaders in both 5G and fiber deployment in international comparisons, and at the same time in offering choice, innovation and value for money to users (consumers, businesses and administrations).
