I talk a lot and often about work-life flow, but what does that mean? Flow refers to a happy feeling, a mental state of absolute concentration and being completely absorbed in an activity that feels like it is done by itself (autotelic). It is a rush of creativity, of creating and doing - without feeling any effort. Happiness researcher Mihály Csíkszentmihályi is considered the founder of flow theory. Over time, he has observed various areas of life, including those of surgeons and extreme athletes, and drawn his conclusions, which I will present to you in this podcast episode. Flow could, so to speak, be described as a kind of constant meditation and arises when completing a task between being overwhelmed/anxious and bored. The approach to flow and its experience always differ from person to person and are therefore always unique. Under certain conditions, flow can even transition into hypnotic and ecstatic trance. I have found that you live and work best when you are in the flow state. From my perspective, the times of struggle and doggedness are coming to an end. Work units that work with each other instead of against each other are in flow and achieve their sales goals or the general success of projects. This applies to every industry. Cohesion, harmony and a sense of unity can only be created through flow. If you want to be successful, vital, healthy and satisfied in life, you need flow and people who are also in flow. My thesis: Flow is contagious, just as energies in general are contagious. Who do you aim to please? Your family, your friends, your clients? I hope the top #1 on the list is YOU. Whenever you say yes to someone, make sure that you are doing with your well-being and peace of mind, not just their own. And if it's not, and you know deep inside that you need to say no, I hope that you can take a deep breath and say, "I'm not here to please everyone; I'm here to protect my peace." Saying no is scary. You're worried about letting people down or seeming like the "bad guy." But if you're constantly bending over backward to make everyone else happy, guess who's getting burned out and resentful?…. YOU. The people who get pissed off when you start setting boundaries? They’re the ones who benefited from you having none. Boundaries aren’t to keep people out; they are gates to let the right people in. And if someone can’t respect your gate, they don’t deserve a seat at your table. So, go ahead. Set the boundary. Say no without the guilt or at the least use one of these statements to give yourself more time. 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱? 😓 Stress and emotion can easily spiral, turning an already tricky situation into something overwhelming. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 leaves your body feeling tense and emotionally raw. When you’re overwhelmed, your brain assumes: “I feel bad, so things must be bad.” This thinking reinforces the stress-emotion cycle, even if things aren’t as bad as they seem. 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀. When you're angry, anxious, or sad, everything feels more intense. Your brain starts seeing normal stressors as emergencies, which dials up your sensitivity. 🔄 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 🔄 1. You’re stressed, so you get emotional. 2. Your emotional state makes everything feel more stressful. 3. The more emotional you become, the worse your stress feels. 4. And before you know it, you're stressed about being stressed! It’s a self-perpetuating loop that makes you overreact to small frustrations, turning a minor issue into a major meltdown. 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 🤚 🧠 𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗜𝘁  Recognise that your emotions might be making your stress feel worse. Just realising this can reduce its grip. 🤔 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀  Ask yourself: “Is this as bad as it feels?” or “Am I reacting emotionally, or is this actually urgent?” This can help you break the cycle of emotional reasoning. 🚶‍♀️ 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 Stress affects the body as well as the mind. A quick walk, stretch, or even deep breathing can help reset your system. 🗣️ 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Saying “I’m feeling anxious” gives you a little distance from the emotion, allowing the logical part of your brain to kick in and respond calmly.
