We had a discussion with Maks Kaplunov, our head of the iOS and Android teams about common mistakes developers make when building iOS apps and gathered valuable information: tips on how to prevent and fix them!🔥🔥🔥 📌Save this for future reference! 1. Ignoring Error Handling    - Mistake: Many developers ignore errors or use `try!`, which can lead to unexpected app crashes.    - Tip: Always handle errors with `do-catch`, and when necessary, inform the user about the issue to ensure the app remains stable. 2. Memory Leaks    - Mistake: Incorrect use of closures or strong references can cause memory leaks and degrade performance.    - Tip: Use weak or unowned references where needed, and test the app with tools like Xcode Instruments (Leaks, Allocations, Zombies). 3. Improper Multithreading Management    - Mistake: Poor organization of multithreading, performing heavy operations, and network requests on the main thread can cause the interface to freeze or lock up.    - Tip: Delegate heavy tasks to a background thread, ensuring that UI updates occur on the main thread. Review different approaches to multithreading, such as GCD, Operation Queue, and async/await, as they each have advantages and should be used appropriately. 4. Unoptimized Resources and Assets    - Mistake: Using unoptimized images and resources can increase the app size and slow down loading times.    - Tip: Optimize images using formats like HEIF/HEVC, and use tools like ImageOptim to compress files without quality loss or opt for SVG formats. I marvel at the new possibilities of AI every day. But sometimes it scares me. It's fascinating and frightening at the same time, the quality with which you can already build your own avatar that not only has your own facial expressions but also your own voice. Unimagined possibilities and unimagined risks of abuse! And the above is just one example. It's good that regulations like the AI Act are being implemented! A couple of weeks ago we had WSA European Young Innovators jury in Vilnius. I'm so impressed by the ever-increasing quality of the WSA winners across all - business models, branding, positioning, the quality of websites and content, and even traction. When I started my journey with WSA back in 2016, social entrepreneurs rarely spoke about business models and being self-sustainable financially. Social businesses were seen and saw themselves as non-profits, projects, or NGOs. However, making an impact is only really possible when a company or a project is self-sustainable financially first. Fast forward to 2024, and we see that the majority of the nominees are in the mindset of organizing their finances sustainably through creative business models that enable them to expand their impact over time. There were 2 shifts in this perception: - In 2018 everyone was talking about making money as a social business, - In 2022 - we started seeing the majority of nominees and winners implementing self-sustaining business models to their social impact businesses. 🤔 What is the main reason CEE software developers sell their services at 50-80% discount compared to companies in the West? This is a question we asked participants of our recent webinar: How to Sell IT Services? The most common answer (40%) that our participants provided was their inability to justify higher prices. However, research shows that B2B buyers do not consider price to be important criteria in making purchase decision. So it doesn't make sense to concentrate on low price. Yesterday I presented at CyberChess in Riga. My key thesis: AI risks are broader than merely deepfakes. It's not just automated content generation but automated distribution that matters. Combined they give birth to disinformation machines of an insane scale. Autopilots that create tons of low-quality noise, win audience engagement, and then convert it into adversary goals. Our mainstream approach to countering disinformation still focuses on individual pieces of content (fact-checking/debunking). In contrast, the new risks can be addressed with a focus on the malicious infrastructure. A few days ago, I stumbled upon an article or perhaps a meme on Facebook that suggested the same amount of gold from 100 years ago could buy you real estate today. Intrigued by this claim, I decided to explore further and compare real estate prices in my native Riga to spot gold prices. My findings, particularly when comparing 2007 with 2023, are quite interesting. 📊 Let's start with some basic data: In October 2023, the average price of standard apartments in Riga was 852 euros per square meter. This price is 47% lower than on July 1, 2007, when the average price of an unrenovated standard apartment reached an all-time high of 1620 euros per square meter. To delve deeper, I conducted some simple calculations to compare the cost of purchasing a 50m² apartment in Riga back in 2007 with the price of spot gold at that time. On July 1, 2007, the spot gold price was 501 euros per ounce. 🏢 To buy a 50m² apartment in 2007, we would need approximately 81,000 euros (50m² * 1620 euros/m²). With 81,000 euros, one could purchase around 161.68 ounces of spot gold (81,000 euros / 501 euros per ounce). Following the analogy mentioned earlier, if the theory holds true, we should be able to get the equivalent of 161.68 ounces of spot gold for whatever the apartment price is in 2023. Let's see how this plays out. In 2023, the new price of a standard apartment in Riga is 852 euros per square meter. Thus, a 50m² apartment would cost 42,600 euros (50m² * 852 euros/m²). 🪙 Now, let's compare this with the spot gold price in October 2023, which is approximately 1743 euros per ounce. For 42,600 euros, we could buy around 24.44 ounces of spot gold (42,600 euros / 1743 euros per ounce). 📉 This comparison reveals a stark difference: In 2007, 81,000 euros could buy 161.68 ounces of gold. In 2023, 42,600 euros could buy only 24.44 ounces of gold. So, while the price of gold has significantly increased over the years, real estate prices in Riga have not kept pace. This highlights the divergent trends in the value of gold versus real estate in Riga over the past 16 years. Sadly, we didn’t purchase 190 ounces of gold back in 2007. However, it's never too late to explore new investment opportunities.
