I was happy to see that at the recent LCL Wallonia One event, cybersecurity was in the spotlight. 🔦 With guidance from Arnaud Martin, an Expert Cybersecurity Regulation & Standardization at Agoria, we explored how the NIS2 Directive, a significant EU legislative update, is set to enhance our cybersecurity measures. The NIS2 Directive expands upon its predecessor by broadening its scope to include a variety of sectors, now also explicitly encompassing data centers. EU member states have until October 17 2024 (this Thursday), to transpose these measures into national law, so it is now crunch time for all those affected. In my experience, information security is still not given the priority it deserves at the C-level in many companies, even as cyber risks continue to grow. Too often, executives don't fully appreciate the scale of the threat, seeing cybersecurity as a secondary concern compared to other business priorities. This results in insufficient resources being allocated, both in terms of budget and manpower, making it difficult to address the full scope of security challenges. When the necessary investment isn't made, security teams find themselves overwhelmed, unable to handle the increasing volume and sophistication of cyberattacks. There's a growing gap between the level of protection needed and what we're actually able to implement with the limited resources provided. This makes it hard to put comprehensive safeguards in place, maintain constant threat monitoring, or effectively respond to incidents when they happen. For any company to stay secure and resilient, it's crucial that C-level executives treat cybersecurity as a core business risk. This requires more than just financial investment; it demands strategic attention at the highest levels to empower the security function. Without this shift in focus, we risk leaving the company exposed to potentially catastrophic cyber threats, and our overall risk management remains incomplete.
