#Aircargo tonnages and rates from key Middle East and Asian origin markets remain highly elevated, especially to Europe, as strong #demand and #disruptions to #oceanfreightservices meet limited capacity on key lanes, pushing up rates dramatically on several major #intercontinentalroutes. According to the latest weekly figures and #analysis from WorldACD Market Data, worldwide #tonnages have rebounded by a further +2% in week 20 following a similar increase the previous week, after dropping by around -8% at the start of May around the Labour Day holidays. Meanwhile, average #globalrates remain more or less stable, rising just two cents to US$2.48 per kilo in week 20 (13 to 19 May) – which is up, year-on-year (YoY), by around +2% and significantly above #preCovid levels (+40% compared to May 2019). Tonnages, YoY, are up by +9% globally, although that figure is inflated by strong demand from Asia Pacific (+15%) and Middle East & South Asia (+16%) origins. On a week-on-week (WoW), and two-week-on-two-week (2Wo2W) basis, average global and regional rates are relatively stable. But compared with last year, average rates from Middle East & South Asia (MESA) are highly elevated (+45%). And to destinations in Europe, average rates from #MESA origins remain more than double (+119%) their level this time last year, as they have for the last seven weeks. New analysis this week indicates that #tonnages from MESA to Europe in the last two weeks are up, YoY, by +31%, with Dubai the top of the list in terms of origin growth points (+148%). Those Dubai tonnages to Europe continue to be inflated by strong sea-air cargo due to the disruptions to container shipping in the Red Sea. But tonnages from Sri Lanka (+57%) and Bangladesh (+28%) are also significantly up, YoY, for the last two weeks combined. European Cargo Logistics GmbH Cargo gears up for more freighters Freighter operator European Cargo and Bournemouth Airport’s in-house handler Cargo First are preparing for the addition of three more Airbus A340 freighters over the coming months. The carrier, which operates flights between Bournemouth in the UK and China, will add its fourth A340-600 converted freighter in July, with two more to follow before October. In turn, Cargo First has over the past year recruited 15 new members of staff to cover warehousing, aircraft handling and security roles. At this stage, the airline has not confirmed on which routes the aircraft will be utilised. Bournemouth Airport managing director Steve Gill said the airport is also looking at longer term infrastructure investment to add more dedicated cargo facilities at the airport. The two companies said they are pitching the airport as an alternative to the constrained London hubs at a time when the Red Sea ocean shipping crisis is helping to drive air cargo demand. They add that the air cargo peak season is fast approaching. European Cargo’s existing A340 freighters operate from the UK airport to Chengdu and Haikou providing e-commerce capacity. Gill said: “Our collaboration with European Cargo has established Bournemouth as a reliable and cost-effective hub for e-commerce and other air freight into the UK, with a proven track record of delivering a highly efficient service for time-sensitive consignments for our customers. “With European Cargo’s additional freighters coming on stream shortly and the constraints facing other UK hubs, we see a significant opportunity to grow the market further as we ramp up for the peak season.” European Cargo’s chief executive Jason Holt said: “We recently celebrated the first anniversary of flights from Bournemouth to Chengdu and in our first year operated almost 300 flights carrying some 20,000 tonnes of cargo. “With our fourth fully converted long-haul freighter expected to enter service in July and two more by October, we see continued growing interest in our aircraft and services. We continue to gear up to handle the autumn peak and accompanying additional services coming on stream in the next few months.” The A340-600 long-haul freighter aircraft offers a payload capacity of 76 tonnes and a cargo capacity of 440 cu m. The sector benefited from trade growth, booming e-commerce and capacity constraints on maritime shipping. The outlook remains largely positive with purchasing managers showing expectations for future growth. Here is the Numbers Game…. +11% YoY percentage increase in global air cargo demand $2.43 The average spot rate per kilogram in March, up 7% from the month prior -2% The decrease in MoM spot rates from China to the U.S., which stood at $4.06 per kilogram. International Air Transport Association (IATA) has highlighted several factors in the #operatingenvironment that can have an impact on the #aircargo industry. In May 2024, the Purchasing Managers Index (#PMIs) for global manufacturing #output and new #exportorders indicated expansion -52.6 and 50.4 respectively. Industrial production and global #crossbordertrade increased month-on-month in April- 0.5% and 1.5% respectively And inflation saw a mixed picture in May. In the EU and Japan, #inflationrates fell to 2.7% and 2.8% respectively, while rising in the US to 3.3%. In contrast, China’s inflation rate remained near zero (0.3%) reflecting weak domestic demand due to high unemployment, slow income growth, and a crisis in the real estate sector, a trend that has persisted since 2023. 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗼! 🇲🇽✈️ According to the "Federal Civil Aviation Agency", in April 2024, 𝟭𝟬𝟱,𝟬𝟱𝟮.𝟴 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝘀 of cargo were registered, 13.5% more than the same month last year. In the first four months of 2024, cargo volume increased by 5.5%, reaching 𝟰𝟬𝟯,𝟰𝟱𝟬.𝟭 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝘀. Among the airports with the highest cargo volume in April, the following stand out 🔝: 1️⃣ Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) with 38,121 tons. 2️⃣ Mexico City International Airport (AICM) with 18,973 tons. This growth is due in part to the transfer of cargo operations from #AICM to #AIFA since September 2023. As a result, AICM had a 59.9% decrease in its cargo volume, while AIFA consolidated its position as the country's main cargo hub. In domestic cargo, Querétaro, Mexico City, Guadalajara and Tijuana stand out. For international cargo, Santa Lucia, Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey stand out. These figures demonstrate the dynamism and growth of the air cargo sector in #Mexico, supported by government policies and the capacity of airports to adjust to new demands and cargo volumes. 🚀📦

This contributed to an exceptional first-half-year performance for air cargo, with volumes exceeding 2023, 2022, and even the record-breaking 2021 levels. Airfreight rates on the transpacific trade were on the slide in October but increased as the month progressed, while prices to Europe continued to improve. The latest figures from the Baltic Exchange Airfreight Index (BAI) calculated by TAC Index show that average rates – both spot and contract – for the trade lane decreased to $5.73 per kg in October compared with $5.98 per kg in September. Many had been expecting rates in October to ramp up due to three days of port strikes on the US east and Gulf coasts and as a reflection of the historical increase between the two months as the industry heads towards the peak season. However, it appears the weaker-than-expected market reported in September continued in October and this, combined with the effects of the Golden Week holiday in China, took its toll on the market. It should be noted, however, that rates did improve as the month progressed and by the end of the month had reached $5.89 per kg. Compared with last year, rates between Hong Kong and North America are up 4.4% on last year, but this is down from the 22% year-on-year improvement registered in September – perhaps a reflection of the improving market conditions last year. Meanwhile, rates from Hong to Europe in October continued on an upward trajectory that started in August. Rates on the trade reached $4.88 per kg in October compared with $4.66 per kg in September reflecting usual seasonal trends. Compared with last year, rates are up 14.6% year on year. However, this does represent a narrowing of performance compared with the summer months when the year-on-year improvement was more than 20% – perhaps a reflection of improving market conditions last year. For the Frankfurt-North America trade, rates continued to trend downwards and were 18.3% behind last year’s levels due to the amount of passenger capacity that has been added back into the market over the past year.
